FIFTEEN CHURCHES PARTICIPATING SO FAR!

Simple menus from Africa and a special PowerPoint we are asking every church in the Region to hold an African meal...you choose the time.

This will help support a two week (April 11-May 1, 2012) visit by Georges and Gertrude Ngoka,  President of the Disciples of Christ in the ROC. It will cost $16,000 to bring them here so these dinners will be a major source of reaching that goal (plus 50% of the Annual Meeting offering). February 26, 2012 is "Freedom Sunday" and an excellent opportunity for us

regstaffnewsREGIONAL STAFF NEWS

The Regional Office will be closed next Monday, February 20 for President's Day.

Sad news for Yolanda Marquez-Lucar, our Regional Minister for Hispanic Ministries. Her car was broken into last Sunday night (while in the church parking lot) and they stole her laptop and other items!! You can imagine how frustrating this is!

Send her a prayer.

Sandhya deserves our special thanks and deep appreciation as she edited the 2012 Lenten Daily Devotional Booklet. This takes many hours and patience in securing all the meditations and then in the layout production. THANK YOU, Sandhya!!

Are you wondering why Ben did not answer your e-mail or your phone call early this week? When the whole neighborhood around the regional office lost electricity for about 12 hours on Sunday,  Ben lost lap top connection for 24 hours.

Also, Ben is battling a case of laryngitis this week that is now 4 days old.

devotionalDEVOTIONAL
By Sue Tarleton, Director of Annual Meeting Planning

Sue TarletonAbout a month ago one of the residents that live here where I work at Margaret McDowell Manor was taken to the hospital. Although this is not uncommon, because Margaret McDowell Manor is an apartment complex for seniors-this gentlemen was very sick and had no immediate family that he wanted contacted.  He also had an apartment FULL of his treasured papers and he was not going to be able to return to the home he had known for the last 13 years. Because he would not be coming back to his apartment-what would become of his stuff?  He does have a nephew on the east coast and finally we persuaded him to let us contact him. The nephew and his wife decided to come and see their uncle and help where they could.  They spent a week visiting him every day and hours in the apartment looking through years of memories, mountains of paper work and old clothes. It was a difficult and pleasurable experience. Hard physical work and good visits which included many stories.  I am thankful that this family had time together.

This last weekend I participated in Spa for the Spirit-A Day for Healing and Wholeness sponsored by CCNCN Women's Ministries. It was a beautiful day-prayer, music, workshops, walking the labyrinth-sharing life with women from throughout our region. Being reminded of who we are and the importance of our life stories.

So, you might wonder-what do these stories have in common?  Well, in both, my resident and I--are letting go-of "things", of independence, of painful losses, of life as previously known. Sometimes it is because we "have to", sometimes it is because we "want to"-but it can be difficult and challenging.  What I do know, is that God is there with us each step of the way. His healing presence guides us and protects us and urges us to make needed changes in our lives. God's love is warm and welcoming and comforting.  God's love is for all of us.

CONCERNS

Hold in prayer

Our continued prayers are with Teresa Fraticelli, Lafayette CC, who entered Stanford Hospital nearly 2 weeks ago for a series of round the clock chemo treatments and then last Thursday she received a bone marrow transplant. She will now remain in the hospital 4-6 weeks in order to avoid any infections since her immune system will be compromised. For now, cards of prayer and care can be sent to 4102 Moller Drive, Pleasanton, 94566.

Our prayers for Connie Cole, wife of Cliff Cole, our Regional Minister for Placement, Training and Care. This week Connie placed her mother, Dona Benedict, in hospice care. Connie and Cliff live only 10 minutes away from her mom so she and cliff can look in on Dona regularly. Cards of care can be sent to: 520 Crestfield Circle, Roseville, 95678.

Our prayers for Disciples clergy, Vickie Firch, wife of Pastor Ted, FCC Sacramento and working hand in hand with him in that ministry as she is undergoing a series of medical tests and medications to address the issue. Cards can be sent to: FCC, PO Box 161416, Sacramento, 95819.

We are sorry to hear that Wendell Pew, is in serious condition following a second knee replacement.  He has had complications with very low blood pressure, kidney and breathing problems.  He had to have a pace maker installed , preventing him from getting up and exercising that new knee.  Many of you know Wendell from his ministry in the region; many years as senior minister at FCC Chico.

Our continued prayers and care for Velva Graves, who was airlifted from Redding nearly two weeks ago,  to UCSF Medical Center with a brain bleed. She is doing amazingly well; able to sit up and talk and eat, but with some short-term memory loss.. It appears that they have found the source of the bleeding to NOT be on the brain! It is expected that they will move her to Enloe Rehab Center in Chico sometime this week.  Velva is the writer of an extensive monthly news column about FCC Redding members that accompanies the regular monthly newsletter.

An update on Pastor Taulau Tupua, Via Dolorosa Congregational CC of Samoa in Modesto, who has been diagnosed with lymphoma leukemia. The doctors believe that they caught this early and he has begun chemo treatment and has taken a two month "leave of absence" from the church. Many will remember Taulau when he introduced the Via Dolorosa Samoan Dance Team at Annual Meeting two years ago.

Taulau will complete chemo very soon and the famkily is very anxious to see the results. The Tupua family and the Via Dolorosa appreciate prayers greatly. You can send cards to: 2329 Senimi Circle, Ceres, 95307.

We are thrilled to hear that long time Regional participant, Ruth Costello, who recently fell and broke her hip is now home! She is already up and around using only a cane; threw that walker away! Ruth was a long time member at FCC San Lorenzo and is now a member at Sierra CC, Loomis with her daughter, Tina Heck. Cards can be sent to: 10743 Ridge Road, Nevada City, CA 95959

Pastor Marty Williams, United CC, Livermore, continues to improve slowly but surely. She says she is back to close to 70% of her energy, but still must be very careful in what she eats. Don't forget her!  Cards can be sent to: 6906 Lassen St. Pleasanton, 94588.

We celebrate the continuing improvement for Barbara Wikoff, musician at Oakdale CC, and husband Bob, Chair of our Regional Resources Committee. She may have only 5 more chemo treatments remaining.  Cards can be sent to: 941 Terrace Court, Oakdale, 95361.

Our prayers go out to Juanita Cope, Member of the Regional Executive Committee, as she prepares for foot surgery on February 21. Considered a minor procedure, Juanita expects to be back to her normal schedule quickly. Cards can be sent to: 357 Elizabeth St., San Francisco, CA 94114.

Our prayers continue for the following who remain in need of our support and concern:

Darrell Burrell, FCC Redding
Bea Tiffee, FCC Dos Palos

Violet Fields, FCC Oakland

Sally Burnham, FCC Redding

Darla Foglio, Oakdale CC

Agnes Sours, Arden CC, Sacramento

Wanda, daughter of Gloria & Nordean Baxter, pastor at Raynor Park CC

finalwordFINAL WORD-
The 2011 CCNC-N Financial State of the Church Report

As our Regional Resources Committee is hard at work finalizing the 2012 regional budget, it seems appropriate to provide a report on our financial status as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Northern CA-NV. Yes, the 2012 budget is still in final stages to be presented to the Regional Ad-Ministry Council on February 18 and the Regional Executive Committee on February 25.

Why is this not completed before the end of 2011? Good question! Simple answer! End of the year major giving from individuals plus final Disciples Mission Fund receipts from local congregations (some churches give to DMF on a semi-annual or quarterly basis and December is that time) plus Christmas Offering (100% goes to support regional ministry) can amount to as much as $40,000!Not knowing that amount until early January makes it impossible to be more detailed in preparing a budget.

The bulk of our regional income is from three areas: Disciples Mission Fund (DMF); local congregational giving designated to the Region,  and The Annual Fund.

Here's what happened in 2011 in those three areas:

DMF- despite some very faithful support from our churches, the economic challenges all around us did hit us hard. We were down 5.78% over a year ago-that amounts to about $12,000. Because most churches commit a % of their local offerings to regional ministry, when a local church giving is down, so is their giving to regional ministry. We understand that many local churches are struggling financially, so the fact that DMF giving was still $194,322 is a blessing to be celebrated! There were some very bright spots among our local churches and we will celebrate that below.

Local Congregational Giving Designated to Regional Ministry

Our budget projected $20,000 in this area. Wow! We received $27,157! That certainly helped to off-set more than half of the DMF loss. We are so thankful for those special gifts.

Annual Fund

This includes Phon-a-thon, Executive Committee pledges, Staff pledges; Mission Action Auction and special donors. This year those totaled:$74,919!

We also gave generously to our four Special Day Offerings:

Easter $11,802(100% goes to support General Church Ministries):

Pentecost $8,83

(50% each to New Church Ministries & General New Church Ministries)

Thanksgiving $7,543

(100% to Disciples colleges, universities, seminaries and seminary houses)

Christmas $14,409 (100% remains here in CCNC-N to support Regional Ministries)

And Special Offerings

Week of Compassion $36,872

Reconciliation $6,714

In addition to these areas of outreach support, CCNC-N churches and individuals also gave $47,278  toward Miracle Day to assist United CC, Fresno; United CC, Livermore and Sierra CC, Loomis experience twenty first century miracles for their church buildings and property. This is incredible over and above giving.

We are grateful for the support of all of our churches, but a special note of gratitude can be given to the following congregations for their outstanding giving:

7 Churches with the highest % of increased DMF giving-2011 compared to 2010:

FCC Sparks-                                      +76.39%

FCC Porterville                                   +67.22%

CC of Pacific Grove                           +58.66%

New Spring Korean, Santa Clara     +50.00%

Mayfair CC, Stockton                         +49.69%

FCC Vallejo                                         +35.15%

FCC Selma                                         +12.29%

7 Churches with the highest total of DMF giving:

FCC Chico                                          $21,000

FCC Sacramento                               $15, 805

FCC Concord                                     $11,538

CC of Woodland                                 $11,304

FCC Palo Alto                                     $10,676

Arden CC, Sacramento                      $8,966

FCC Redding                                      $8,400

7 Churches with the highest per capita DMF giving:

Chalice CC, San Carlos                     $281.06

BRIM                                                     $252.44
Disciples of Christ-Visalia                  $247.78
Arden CC, Sacramento                      $173.16
First CC, Sacramento                         $156.28
Foresthill CC, San Francisco             $153.84
Oakdale CC                                          $137.00

One other major change from a year ago is the number of churches who gave $000.00 to any Disciples outreach effort: from 17 to 7!  Our newest Disciples churches are learning the joy of sharing in Disciples mission and ministry and becoming full participants in the exceptional outreach we are able to do together.

Finally, we had a very successful audit in which there were only two very minor suggestions. In general, excellent report.

Once again, Disciples in Northern CA-NV have shown incredible generosity and support for regional life and ministry. We ended 2011 with a surplus of over $15,000!

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
