APPRAISAL BEST PRACTICES by Jeff Hicks, President The Dohring Group/realwired!
Time for a HaircutAre you familiar with the term Androgenic alopecia? It sounds scary doesn't it? Actually, it's just male pattern baldness, but I am now bald for a different reason. Self-inflicted hair removal. It's for a good cause. A family friend is going through chemotherapy for breast cancer, so showing support by doing a small thing as shaving goes a long way in the "I'm thinking and care about you" department. Truth be told, I did pause before going to my barber. Going "cue ball" was way outside of my comfort zone. I sought out an expert, a Cuban man who just opened his business in downtown Tampa. He's a self-proclaimed master barber from Havana, Cuba complete with Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner music creating a concerto vibe. This artisan "old school" barber quickly took off my pelo (hair) as evidenced by my hair all over his floor. The strange thing was I got used to the new look quickly. Others were a little slower to adopt the new "me", but once I changed my (hair) reference point, things became clearer. Going "Kojak" makes you look younger but most men won't do it. It's similar to how commercial real estate appraisers view their internal productivity systems. I hear it all the time talking to prospective customers of our report writing product called Edge, comp management database DataComp and appraisal workflow app called Manager. A typical appraiser will say, "I'm not ready for that yet", "What we do now works for us" or "it costs too much." Really? In 2012? Yes. I am saying that many appraisers are in denial. However, because of the commoditization trend of commercial appraisals largely due to Dodd-Frank, appraisers can no longer ignore the need to change. Those that ignore the writing on the wall are akin to "The Donald"...pretending to have a lot of hair but really have a horrifying comb-over with wispy hair crisscrossed in a lattice design. Hair loss is a natural and somewhat embarrassing issue for most men. However, pretending the problem is not there ignores reality. Pretending that our industry is not getting punched in the ribs only adds stress and a lighter wallet. Instead, invest time and money to improve your efficiencies of how you create your appraisal product. You're worth it. Don't do it reluctantly. Shave it off! If you would like to join a discussion about this topic or Appraisal Best Practices contact Jeff Hicks.

Are You Seeing Double?
Do you utilize two (or three) computer screens at your office? I know some appraisers I speak with have implemented multiple screens in the past few years and now cannot work without them. It allows you to have email up on one screen and a web browser on another, or have DataComp on one screen and Word and Excel on the other screen. Efficiency and the ability to work faster are essential due to more appraisal work needing to be completed in tighter time frames. Monitors have gone down in price over the past few years and it isn't that costly to get a dual-screen video card and/or a USB to VGA multi-monitor external video adapter or to set it up. You can buy individual monitors or prepackaged multiple monitors (professional-grade and much better). If you take my advice and decide to try this work station set-up, please send me an

RealWired! TECH NEWS
Ever wonder why sometimes your computer acts different than it did the day before? It could be as easy and simple re-booting your machine.
A lot of people just "Log-Off" at the end of each day. However, I recommend getting in the habit of rebooting your machine at least once a week. You will allow all your hardware to refresh and update all your drivers by doing so. This should prevent your machine from "acting up all of a sudden" every couple of weeks.
Please contact John Rosario in Technical Support at (813) 221-0703 to schedule upgrades or for more helpful tips.
