Top of the Week to You! is designed to offer the inside scoop and latest of what's important in the world of technology as it relates to the commercial real estate industry.

Are We Slowing Down or Drinking from the Fountain of Youth?

Did you know that much less than one percent of the global populations have the wealth, health, political and cultural freedoms, family support and free time that makes up our lifestyle?  Particularly in this political season, high rates of productivity in China, India, and other emerging economies point to us losing ground to competitors in world markets.  Maybe but maybe not.  Consider this.  It could be that these places are simply in an "emerging" era and not in an "advanced" state like the United States and other older economies like Europe.  Okay, I didn't mean to bring that up!  But really, it seems that as many of the world markets emerge; they follow the path of human growth.

I get to watch this because I have a granddaughter soon to be a year old.   I could look at her as being highly productive, because she's growing like crazy and will continue to do so until she's about four years old.  She'll continue to have a lot of energy into her teens and hopefully well into her 20's.  Sometime in her 30's she'll start to "mature" and then there's generally a slowing as one hits middle age.  Generally speaking, we all adjust to the changes pretty well.  Sometimes we work to accelerate or slow things down.  So can this growth pattern which happens in many places in nature and in markets around the world, if you follow my analogy, be applied to us as we work our way through our careers?  I say, "Yes."

Another truism is that happiness lies in one's ability to recognize it.  So are we happy with how we process things now?  Are we happy with our company's, department's or our own personal level of productivity?  By productivity, I mean the basics. You know, how we get things done day in and day out.  Allow me to return to the human growth pattern correlation.  Did you know that by the end of their first year, an infant's height generally increases by 50 percent and by the age of two, a baby's weight will have quadrupled?  However, this doesn't happen on a smooth timeline; rather, it happens in spurts.  A baby can go through periods of 7 to 63 days with no growth, but they can also add as much as an inch in one 24-hour period.   So it makes sense and of course we know that we greatly impact the "growth" of our careers. Are we infants, adolescence, mature or old?  Are you content with your answer? If not, read on.

One of the important "rules" of happiness, I have already mentioned, is based on perception.  Happiness lies in one's ability to recognize it.  So as we look at ways to be "happier" about how efficient or productive we are, we sometimes make comparisons to others and our expectations are shaped by those comparisons.  In our industry let's we say we want tailored software applications that simplify the deal-management process.  That makes sense doesn't it?  Based on what we know it makes sense that we want easy access to data and documents, we want something that optimizes quality of service, something that can give us performance and metric-based monitoring and reporting, and handles some automation of repeatable workflows.  Why?  Because if done right there can be dramatic increases productivity, profitability and personal satisfaction.  We can feel like we're in our early 20's and 30's - full of energy.  We're not in adolescence; because we recognize the challenge it is for all of us to manage disparate information sources and the rapid changes in technology. That's why we look hard for companies that our peers tell us they trust to make things work the way they're supposed to.  We look with envy at companies that have made great progress by using the right processes and associated technology because it seems like they have not only drank from the fountain of youth, but they are swimming in it.  By the way, did you know that there's a Fountain of Youth in the city of St. Augustine, Florida and that several years ago magician David Copperfield claimed to have discovered a true "Fountain of Youth" in the Bahamas? But I digress.

What we want is available but it takes some work.  We really do have to turn back the clocks somehow and maybe even turn them back to early childhood.  We have to wonder what can be done, watch and learn from others that are doing a good job at managing data and systems and have the energy to participate.  Only then can we feel confident about where we are going on our next growth cycle. We must ensure that our next growth cycle incorporates flexible, easily customizable components and tools to improve our business processes, workflows, document production, storage and retrieval and overall communication.  There's a future bright with life-cycle-of-the-deal methodology that can make us secure in knowing that our careers and companies haven't started a rapid descent into old age.
