Remotely Connected or Not
Mark Twain said, "The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation." I say this since I just returned from a vacation and so while I agree that it's a great quote and certainly applicable, it's not to be taken literally. Vacations, as far as I'm concerned, are for unplugging and recharging. My favorite vacations are ones where it is nearly impossible to stay connected. If that sounds good to you but you haven't figured out how to have a career that allows you to take unplugged vacations; that is a problem. I can't quite imagine being in a job that I didn't find interesting, engaging and exciting. And I'll bet you can't either. So the real issue is how do we continually reinvent our career paths so that our vocation allows us to vacation? And when we get on vacation, how do we control the connection or lack thereof to our vocation?
As I boarded the plane on this particular trip, I took with me a book I was given during the Christmas holiday. I liked this book because it matched my belief system that the only way to have a successful career is to enjoy what you do. The book takes things a little further by helping a person understand not only what they seem to like to do, but what they are hardwired to do successfully. Sounded like a good read to me. Problem was, I got on the plane only to discover that the book had a "Key" that unlocked access to the online test that would help me understand my natural strengths and therefore make the book a useful tool. While I surely appreciated the combination of a book with an online assessment, I sure wish I had known that the online assessment was a prerequisite to what I hoped would be interesting reading on a three-hour flight. Instead I took a nap and read a magazine.
I've since taken the assessment and done the reading and you might want to check out the book Strengths Finder for yourself. It will reveal your talents. Oh and remember, talents are completely different from acquired knowledge, skills, and interests. You cannot change talents very much so it's great to know what they are. If you take the time to take the assessment and then read the book it can open up your creative insight, energy and talent. Furthermore, if you continue to put yourself in positions that take advantage of your natural talents, vacations can be more frequent and your vocation can actually feel more like a vacation. Thank you, Mark Twain.
So back to being out somewhere in the hinterlands and making certain that you still have a functioning company or a job to go back to. Return refreshed and without piles of everything that didn't get taken care of in your absence, requiring you to "double time" it so your vacation wears off really fast. If you want to go away for any extended period of time technology has to become your friend. That said, clearly technology goes a long way to freeing us up so that we can get away from the office more frequently, but it can also be a tether so we don't fully unplug and recharge. So find the balance that you want and lay the ground rules first. I had the same conversation today with one of our clients who was lamenting about how challenging, and expensive it is to be in some wonderful remote vacation spot and still try to ensure that you're plugged in when you need to be and unplugged when you want to be. We had some good laughs. But you could also hear the pain in our stories. I know you know what I'm talking about.
This last trip away found me down at one of my favorite spots the Virgin Islands. And yes, for the most part cell phone coverage is pretty good, but it certainly isn't inexpensive at $1.99 per minute. I suggest you face it, that even when you are "connected" you surely won't be as efficient as when you're sitting at your desk with three screens in front of you, a tablet, a cell phone or two, and there's no distraction from your travel mates plying you with fun or in my case rum. That will just frustrate you for no good reason. Lastly, take a few precautions to make things a little smoother. Here are my top three tips:
1. Always travel with a minimum of two ways of getting online and connect with your office. 2. Print out on paper important contact numbers and passwords you might need. 3. Carry a spare rechargeable battery and a simple multi-plug so you can share outlets that may be overly popular.
So if you decide to explore your talents, and I hope you will, I'm pretty sure it will help you whether you're plugged or unplugged while taking those vacations! And if you've got some good tips or some frustrating stories I'd sure like to hear them!
