Have You Noticed Anything Different?

I hope you make it a regular practice to check in on your "brand".  Since Google remains the top search engine just checking there is probably good enough for most of us.  If you do check it regularly, you might have noticed something differrent in the appearance of the search engine results page. For searches that Google thinks are brand-based (think, your company name), there has been an "expansion" and, unlike the expansion of my waistline, this expansion is really good. These are called sitelinks and appear in two columns to help users easily navigate deeper into the site. The sitelinks are still generated and ranked algorithmically based on the link structure of your site, and they'll only appear if useful for a particular search.  So the deal is, Google is getting even smarter.  This change won't significantly upset your Search Engine Optimization Plan...yes, I assume you have one, but it may require some tweaking.

You can't absolutely control the links that appear in the search engine results page, but you can use Google Webmaster Tools to let Google know about links you don't want to appear as sitelinks. Any removal will only be good for 90 days and you get no promise of a timeframe for when they will be removed.

I'm thinking you'll want to do a little housekeeping.  Get rid of any unwanted stuff showing up as ancillary links on your brand search, such as old "news" or popular, but not really relevant blog posts.  Make page titles as short as possible; less than 25 characters is best.  Remember, Google is so cool because it works hard to learn more about what people want from you.  Not the other way around, where you post out only what you want people to know about.  It's all about what we as "searchers" want.  As business owners, we may not want to give over that kind of control to a "third party" who can't possibly know our business as well as we do, but it really helps us all.  And if you take the time to review what people are interested in on your site, you can now learn even more and serve those folks even better!  And that's most cool in my personal opinion.

So take a few minutes and check out your brand.  Having just recently learned of these changes, I have work to do on both of my companies, so don't feel like you're alone.  This "difference" in Google is good. Our job is to make use of the change for oursleves and our visitors!
