TOP OF THE WEEK TO YOU!
(by realwired! CEO, Brenda Dohring Hicks)

Top of the Week to You! is designed to offer the inside scoop and latest of what's important in the world of technology as it relates to the commercial real estate industry.

Emily Post Alive and Well

I had some interesting reactions to last week's column about email etiquette.  Email clearly is a blessing and a curse (as you shared with me) but it is here to stay and the social rules will continue to develop.  The rule I proposed last week...

Rule of 48.  During business hours try to respond within 48-minutes.  The next threshold is 4-8 hours (get it?) and lastly respond within 48 hours.   Even if you don't have "the answer" within 48 hours, send a response telling the recipient you're working on getting them an answer and will respond as soon you have one.  Naming the "rule"' helps everyone remember and repeat it.

I wasn't being all that insightful.  I was just telling a "story" so it could be shared and shared and hopefully grow some legs.  That's how things evolve and always have since the dawn of time.  So if you like the Rule of 48 repeat it often knowing that you're having an impact.  Hey, if "the butterfly effect" which illustrates that a small change can make a big difference, then I think you see my point.

So back to the responses I received last week.  There was one in particular that I got permission to share from one of our readers.   Ann began by telling me that she's found that as new ways of communication become mainstream, people tend to take short cuts - think, acronyms and jargon.   So Ann relates that when she was in junior high, LOL meant "Lots of Love", and didn't think twice about using LOL, "the newly revised slang," in a text to a friend going through chemotherapy.  Thankfully, it was a close friend who went to junior high with her and they were able to "Laugh Out Loud" at the blunder.  We can all see ourselves in her story can't we?   Ann went on to write that, "It's important to remember that we may need to learn new ways of communicating if we want our message to be properly understood."

Ann also shared a long list of tips. The one I want to share may bring you love and admiration from everyone you communicate with, but it does take some effort.  Don't most things that have a reward require some effort?  Here it is... "Summarize long discussions. Scrolling through pages of replies to understand a discussion is annoying. Instead of continuing to forward a message string, take a minute to summarize it for your reader. You could even highlight or quote the relevant passage, then include your response." Now that brings value!

So thanks for all the feedback and your willingness to flutter your wings so we can all enjoy the benefits of almost instantaneous and certainly efficient communicating.
