TOP OF THE WEEK TO YOU!
(by realwired! CEO, Brenda Dohring Hicks)BDH Photo

Top of the Week to You! is designed to offer the inside scoop and latest of what's important in the world of technology as it relates to the commercial real estate industry.
You've Heard it Once.  You've Heard it Twice.  You've Heard it a Lot.
I overheard it at breakfast this morning.  We, as service companies, need to communicate and communicate often.  It was interesting because the conversation was coming from an attorney who was speaking about national service firms, so certainly, that's about you and me. What he was talking about was that he was going take the four days over the Thanksgiving holiday to revamp his website.  While I didn't partake a lot in the conversation, it generally revealed that not only does this attorney take responsibility and control for his website, and this from a sizable firm, but he also recognizes that it's really, really important to have worthwhile content on the site. Something that someone wants to find when they're in need, but also something that will be picked up by search engines and crawlers.  How does that happen? It happens by frequency.  It happens when enough people see the content that is put out there and start to see this firm as a resource.

We all know the adage. People like to do business with people that they know and like.  If done correctly, a website helps portray a level of "friendship", but of course, only if there's something personal about it.  Otherwise, it's a glorified Yellow Pages ad. Good news is it doesn't cost as much as those old-fashioned Yellow Pages ads did.  But here's the deal... if you've heard it once or twice, you've heard it a whole bunch of times; you need to add some sort of ongoing interaction and possibly a blog. Not that I didn't say you absolutely have to do a blog, because frankly, for most professional service firms there's not a lot of back-and-forth interaction that creates an active blog and sometimes an inactive blog can be a problem.

But let's say that you're on the side of wanting to communicate more, but you're worried you don't think you have "award-winning writer" as part of your byline, so maybe you're concerned about being able to create quality content that will be valuable to someone.  Get over that. There so many topics to blog about that will give a potential reader a broader knowledge about commercial real estate, lending, architecture law engineering, whatever segment of the particular real estate industry you participate in.  So here's the deal. I put together 52 topics...that's one for every week...for the next 12 months. I'm happy to send them to you, because sometimes it's just the getting started.   Trust me, I know.  I've been writing RealWired news for almost 7 years now and I sometimes have a hard time, so I know you will too.  But think about it. You can write about how to prepare your property to get the best lease rates, common scams and how to avoid them, information about loan modification, average pricing of your particular product, how to keep the best vendor list and on and on and on.  I really would like to see more of my commercial real estate brothers and sisters actively changing content on their websites and engaging in blogs. So do me a favor...shoot  me an e-mail and let me give you 52 ideas to talk about.  Click here to join our blog discussion.
