Sunday evening I was talking to an appraiser friend of mine. I began to talk about the Alabama vs. South Carolina football game that took place this past Saturday. I am a neutral fan, but it was a pretty big upset and I had just assumed that my friend had watched the game. Instead, he was kind of irritated because everyone he knows was talking about the game, but he had to miss it because he was stuck in the office trying to work on a report that had a deadline for the early part of the week.
This is someone who, for years, I have tried to get to buy either our software (DataComp - in-house comp database and EDGE - commercial report writing) or some type of software that would improve efficiency. His excuse was always that he couldn't justify the cost or the time it took to learn new software.
Every now and then I would mention it to him and it always seemed to be when he was stuck in the office late or complaining that he didn't have much of a weekend because he was rushing to meet a deadline. After talking with him this past Sunday, he finally admitted that while the initial monetary and time investment could be a tad painful, it didn't compare to the frustration he felt once again when he missed out on a big college football game and didn't have any free time over the weekend.
He said while he always meets his deadlines, the price he pays working 6-7 days a week and missing out on fun stuff is a lot worse than spending money on in-office efficiencies like a comp database or report writing software.
I myself am a huge Rays fan and with them playing in the middle of the workday last week, I forgot that the game was on. Although I couldn't watch it even if I had remembered it was on, I understood what my friend must have been going through this past Saturday. At least I knew I wasn't the only one missing it in the middle of the work week, and not stuck in the office over the weekend missing out on a big game. As almost everyone would agree, we would much rather be watching a game in overtime rather than working overtime.
