APPRAISAL BEST PRACTICES
by Jeff Hicks, President
The Dohring Group/realwired!©
We have been gathering best practice tips for over ten years from the best appraisers in the country. Now we'd like to share them with you. |
|
Two months ago, a prominent MAI passed away suddenly. His name was George Cuddeback. He was a very sharp and knowledgeable appraiser that loved to share his knowledge with others.
George was no ordinary appraiser. He was also an accomplished photographer and artist. He would take largely black-and-white photography and blend in various images that were not associated with one another, but somehow he made it all work well together. The Taj Mahal and the Florida Everglades juxtaposed on one print comes to mind. He won many awards.
At the informal wake, I met numerous appraisers that told stories about George. Most were funny and had something to do with having a good time. George loved to talk about politics and religion or any other topic that required a strong opinion. The consensus from the appraisers in the room is that their careers were significantly enhanced with the mentoring of Mr. Cuddeback. Often teased as a liberal, left of communist, George always gave back to his fellow appraisers and clients.
After his passing, I was at a local hospital visiting a family member when I saw one of George's prints on the wall that he donated. His presence was there and will continue to be, evident with those he touched in the Tampa Bay area.
So take note. You are not going to live forever. How do you want to be remembered? Should you make changes now professionally or personally? Be a mentor for your appraisers and share your wealth of knowledge. Encourage young folks to be commercial appraisers; we need to replenish the aging herd, myself included. Be professional all the time. Raise the bar for the appraisal profession. Be proud to be an appraiser. Don't be ordinary. Be like George and give back.
If you have an appraisal "best practice" you would like to share, please forward to Jeff. |
