While reading Og Mandino's best seller, The Greatest Salesman in the World, I was struck by this strong passage. "Experience teaches thoroughly yet devours men's years so the value of the lessons diminishes with time necessary to acquire special wisdom. The end finds it wasted on dead men." Ouch! My take-away is that experience is short-term and must be a work in progress, not just replicating what you learned 20 years ago. Preparing appraisals like you did in 1980 may have proved successful then, but is now unworkable and impractical.He goes on to talk about the only difference between those who have failed and those who succeed is a difference in their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits unlock the door to failure.So take stock in your behavior and how you operate your appraisal profession. Wake up and step off the appraisal treadmill of cranking out reports and identify areas to improve efficiency. Freshen up your report format and writing styles. Implement new software and technology to automate the appraisal process. Start tracking your appraisals from bid to completion. If you are not using a comp database and report writing solution in 2010...STOP NOW...and change.
