New Mudflat Building

Dear East Broadway Friend,

With $3.8 million dollars invested,

East Broadway is now home to Boston's, and arguably New England's, premier clay and pottery center.  This week, Mudflat Studio officially opened in its new building at 81 Broadway in what was formerly the Broadway Theater.

As a member of East Somerville Main Streets and a key part of our leadership team, Mudflat models many of our goals:  Reinvesting in their neighborhood, returning a historic landmark to a proud neighborhood icon, and creating a neighborhood resource.  A big congratulations to Mudflat - Make sure you go by to check out East Broadway's newest gem!

Warmly,

Carrie Dancy, Director

  •  To celebrate Mudflat's move to their new building, you're invited to their Grand Opening September 10th, 12-4pm!  Ribbon cutting at noon with Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, live music, pottery demonstrations, and an exhibition of claywork by Mudflat studio artists. Hands-on fun, too - Help them decorate a giant clay pot for our new building.

  • Fritz, owner of Blessing Caribbean Restaurant, just opened a shop called Providence Variety Store a few doors down from his eatery on Broadway.
  • Fresh Face on Broadway - This month Joe's Liquor took a lemony dive into new paint, applying a fresh coat of yellow paint to one of Broadway's biggest storefronts has already started to light up the street.

Behind the Scenes
Green Line

One of areas ESMS tackles is advocacy on issues that impact East Broadway and East Somerville. This month, much like the rest of the City of Somerville, ESMS has the delayed Greenline Extension on our mind.

Issue Summary: Much to the dismay of the City of Somerville, community groups and residents, the completion date for the Greenline Extension, slated for 2011, has been pushed out by the state to 2018 or 2020.  This delay is compounded by the lack of any plan for project completion. In East Somerville, the biggest impact will be felt near the corner of Washington Street and Joy Street, where a station is proposed for construction. As East Somerville is an Environmental justice community, with several rail lines coming through and polluting the area, without stopping to serve it, the Greenline promises to be an important part of having equitable transportation for the neighborhood.

Take Action!:

petition demanding a clear plan from the state.

Neighbor of the Month
Neusa's Decoration

Neusas

Neusa's Decoration, located at 133B Broadway, opened just two months ago, making it one of our newest neighbors and members!  You may have noticed them at SomerStreets with their bright over-sized kids party decorations -- one of their signature products.  Using these, Neusa and her two daughters, Graziella and Izabella, transform their clients' parties into Dora the Explorer and Strawberry Shortcake wonderlands (among other themes). They also make a variety of unique decor for weddings and other types of events.
