Dear East Somerville Main Streets Friend,

This summer, East Broadway was selected and hosted the first event in the City's 2011 SomerStreets series.  The Carnaval @ SomerStreets drew nearly 5000!  The selection of East Broadway to launch this event series, over the more event-versed Union or Davis squares, is a milestone in East Somerville Main Streets' work to rebuild the East Broadway Business District and an acknowledgement of all of the resources located along Broadway and within our community.  Thanks to all who sponsored, participated or attended the event.  You each brought us a little closer to this milestone.

Check out the Carnaval @ SomerStreets Photos here.

Warmly,

Carrie Dancy, Executive Director

Behind the Scenes
Developing a Mile Long Event!

What does it take to develop an event that spans from all the way from Temple Street nearly to the Somerville cityline as Carnaval @ SomerStreets did?
A whole lot of partnership!

Carnaval @ SomerStreets was developed through a hand in hand partnership between the City of Somerville, East Somerville Main Streets and the FossFest, each group working hard to develop programming for this long stretch of Broadway!  Through this partnership, we offered more than five locations with live music, 20+ kids activities, 30 participating businesses, a farmers market, a craft market and much more!   And as real partnerships are an essential part of the Main Streets Model, we say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Make sure to check out the business sponsors who supported this event!

Volunteer Opportunity of

the Month

This month we'd like to send a BIG thank you to all of volunteers who made Carnaval @ SomerStreets happen! And we apologize in advance if we miss anyone, as there were so many great volunteers!

 Neighbor of the Month

Presidents

Kat Johnson, East Somerville Main Streets newly elected president, is the June Neighbor of the Month! Kat, an employee at East Somerville's Triumvirate Environmental and a Somerville resident, got involved with ESMS in early 2010 working with our Business Membership Committee.  Ever since she has dived into strengthening the organization from the inside out! Her peers recently nominated Kat to follow in the blazing trail of her predecessor Susan Fontano, because of her strong leadership, planning and organizational skills, all of which will be put to use as East Somerville Main Streets continues to grow.  Want to reach out to our new president to share a thought?  Email her at kjohnson@triumvirate.com.

Did You Know...?

that East Somerville is FINALLY home to a coffee shop?

You've written.  You've emailed. You've called.  And you've all wanted a coffee shop in East Somerville.

Last week, Gus DaCunha opened Ola Gifts Café,  located at 115 Broadway (conveniently next to the ESMS office! We're now fully caffeinated and working harder than ever!)  Gus is serving only the best coffee and espresso in his shop and is developing a menu as well, working over time to tailor it to the neighborhood's tastes!  A hit so far?  His delicious croissant sandwiches.

Vinny's

This month Linda takes us to an East Broadway staple: Vinny's! Her visit proved to be very timely after the restaurant was showcased on the Food Network earlier this week. She tells of Vinny's past and what makes his restaurant so rich in character and good food!  Read the whole story here.
