Carrie Dancy

Dear East Somerville Friend,

Seems these days East Broadway and East Somerville are alive with activity. Just two weekends ago it was hard to decide what to do:  Go to the new City Cleanup site on Broadway?  Or off to the Somerville Open Studios sites: the  "East Somerville Spot" and Mudflat with its 50+ participating artists.  And if decisions weren't difficult enough, throw into the mix Saturday's Somerville Reads launch event at the East Branch library, and Sunday's "Hidden in Plain Sight," historic walking tour of East Somerville attended by more than 40!

These activities are a taste of what's happening in the East Broadway Business District.  Hope you come out and join us soon!

Warm Regards,
Carrie Dancy
Executive Director

Behind the Scenes:

The Makings of a First Tuesdays Event

At ESMS we pride ourselves on being able to bring together so many types of people to celebrate East Somerville and the East Broadway Business District. Our "First Tuesdays" events are great examples of the variety of people who work together for an event to happen.

Our office reaches out to residnts, volunteers, and business owners as people like Renee Polcaro, East Somerville property owner and resident, takes care of the administrative details and the outreach prior to events. The restaurant owners take a lead role to ensure the restaurant is set up and the appetizers are ready, on top of their regular duties to run their dinner shift.

This year we are also bringing in outside community members for entertainment, adding a new element to our events! Check out the 2011 season of First Tuesdays events to see the fruits of everyone's labor!

 Neighbor of the Month

If you enjoy the beautiful spring flowers planted along Broadway's median you can thank our May neighbor of the month: Ron McCollem. Ron has been working for the DPW for 10 years and is one of the staff responsible for maintaining our beautiful Broadway median gardens. Ron, an East Somerville resident, takes great pride in the whole area and you may even see him on a Saturday pulling over his truck to remove a poster on a Broadway telephone poll.   Thanks Ron.

Did You Know...?

East Somerville is home to four Brazilian restaurants including two churrascarias! Gauchao and Rodizio are both churrascarias, or Brazilian steakhouses. Churrasco refers to the specific cut of meat that is skewered and grilled over hot coals on a churrasqueira or a barbecue grill. The servers rotate around the tables with skewers of meat including beef, pork, filet mignon, lamb, chicken, duck, ham, sausage, fish, or any other sort of local cut of meat.

Pasteleria Broadway and Launches Brazil, our other Brazilian restaurants, are home to the formidable Brazilian burger (pictured above). The burger consists of a beef patty layered with bacon, ham, a fried egg, a slice of tomato, cheese, lettuce, corn and potato sticks on a sesame seeded Kaiser roll. Eating this is no easy feat!

Pupusa Workshop Draws 70

First Tuesdays launched to one heck of a start with seventy plus people coming out to learn the secrets of making pupusas and to enjoy live Peruvian music by Son del Sol and dancing by Guisella.

The crowd of happy pupusa makers included the Consul of El Salvador, Jose Aleman, pictured below with Maya Sol staff and another aspiring cook.
