Who Knew Cleaning Could be So Fun?
East Somerville Clean Up a Success:
50+ Volunteers

Clean Up 2009

The East Somerville site of the City Clean Up set the bar for years to come.  More than 50 volunteers came out to clean East Somerville - all the way from Tufts Street to Harris Park!  About three quarters of East Somerville's streets were left spic and span thanks to the work of Bill Roche, Maureen Bastardi, and Dennis Sullivan, as well as the leadership committee Katherine Moxhet, Christian Waeber, Judy George, and Erica Hubbard.

A special thanks to Casey's Bar who hosted one heck of an after party!

Congrats to East Somerville's Grossman Marketing Group

Taco Loco Mural Artist Honored by the Salvadorian Consulate
Salvadorian Consulate

Ever ponder the mural at Taco Loco over the last bites of your burrito? The painter behind this work, Hector Perlera, was honored on May 28th at the Salvadorian Consulate in an exhibition organized to recognize the work and contributions of influential contemporary Salvadorian artists. Perlera, a Somerville resident, "combines vibrant Latino visual traditions and contemporary techniques, his unique works often refer to the rural life and scenes of his native El Salvador."  Perlera is very well known in the US and El Salvador and has been featured in a recent book highlighting El Salvador's best artists.  See more in the Somerville Journal.

New Parking Regulations

No Parking
A new set of parking regulations recently passed  by the Traffic and Parking Commission should be on everyone's radar.   To be effective June 19:
  • Doubling meter rates citywide
  • Making all unmetered parking spots across the city resident only (effective August 1, 2009)
  • Extend meter hours until 8pm on weekdays, and 10pm on Saturdays.
Read in the Journal about how the business community across the city is organizing to protest these new regulations.

Help East Somerville Be Represented In the Census

Census

Research shows that in cities entitled to federal funds for every person not counted by the US Census, the city receives $1500 less.  As one of the many organizations in Somerville awarded federal funds to fulfill our mission, ESMS would like to see the coming 2010 Census be as accurate as possible.

The City is seeking people to help ensure that each neighborhood is accurately represented, if you are interested contact Daniel Hauck, 1-617-625-6600 ext. 2587, DHauck@somervillema.gov.
