Greetings!
Its been a few weeks since you have heard from us. As we welcome 2010 and the beginning of Funny Frogs, Inc; I would like to share personal news with you.
(1) Dos Funny Frogs went back home to Cuba to visit our family.
(This is the view from my bedroom in Havana)
Cuba is one of the most intriguing countries on earth. It is one that most Americans want to visit and wonder about. My mother and I had the privilege to flight (THANKS TO OBAMA) directly from New York City (JFK) to Havana. It is a short flight. In just about 3 hours and 15 minutes I went from an aggressive capitalist economy to the only "communist economy" left in our planet.
Nothing has changed since I left home back in 1997, yet everything is evolving. Fifty two years since Castro took over the power and Cuba has been frozen on time. My little nephews (now 6 and 8 years old) still play with my favorite Russian (Soviet) toy from the 80's. The beautiful colonial buildings and plazas near my home in old Havana are begging for an European Spaniard touch. Their facades urgently need renovations. My family's friend 1953 Chevrolet Station Wagon is still running, and secretly asked me for a coat of fresh pain. But it celestial light blue cannot be found in the island. There is no Walmart, Petboys or Autozones.
Many things have been taken away over the years from Cubans, but music, happiness and hope are still alive in every single corner of the country. Beatiful people wonder the streets of havana, they look tired, but always well dressed. Many of them smoking their favorite Cuban cigar.
To the average Cuban, Philadelphia is not too close to them. Miami, is the center of their universe. To my surprise, I do not look Cuban to many of them. Once they know "I am from Philly" they wonder how far is Philly from Miami. My answer wont matter, all they know is about Miami.
My dad, brothers and sister are still in Cuba. I am the first family member to scape the island and to become an American Citizen. They are proud of me. To them I represent hope and prosperity; I am their agent of change.
(Here is my family. Those of you who knows me, might recognize my mother as well). She was the one who started Dos Dunny Frogs!
Upon my return to the States and arrival to New York City, I quickly realize how privileged we are. While I was not culturally chocked by any means, my mind was troubled by all the basic commodities I have and that my family lacks. But this wont slow me down. This will make me stronger to focus on my business and guarantee that my customer received they best cleaning service I can provide. Because I hope that one day my family in Cuba could also afford to hire a professional cleaning service that will take care of the old Spanish tiles in my old living room.
Happy new Year 2010 Everyone! And thanks you for your support in 2009.
Sincerely,
Alex Suarez
