News from the President - Wayne Watkins
watkins
A lot of things are happening at UEDA as we prepare for an exciting and engaging Summit 2009. Your officers and Board members are working diligently to:
  • Promote the role of higher education in economic development,
  • Provide valuable training and networking opportunities, and to
  • Increase the effectiveness of, and the appreciation for, higher education in regional and national economic development strategy.

Recently we:

  • Enhanced the 2009 Summit by adding additional keynote speakers including Emily Stover DeRocco, President of The Manufacturing Institute and the Institute's National Center for the American Workforce; Senior Vice President of the National Association of Manufacturers; and former Assistant Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush.
  • Made plans to attract even more new members to UEDA, develop more partnerships with mission-related organizations, and enhance member services and delivery of those services; and
  • Completed a Board meeting in Reno, Nevada to tour sites for the 2010 Summit, oversee administrative matters and update the Association's strategy and its implementation.

Now is the time to register for Summit 2009 and take advantage of the Early Bird registration rate of $550. After mid-August, the Early Bird registration rate will disappear. We trust you will find the early bird registration advantageous.

In addition, it's time for you to volunteer and/or nominate others to serve on the UEDA Board of Directors. At the Annual Meeting on October 13, 2009, you will be voting to elect three Board members and a vice president. You may send your nominations to Past President Genna Hurd.

Please join me in welcoming the following new members to UEDA:

The University of Tennessee Institute for Public Service engages the expertise of the statewide university to help leaders in government, business and law enforcement solve real-world problems every day. In fiscal year 2008, this assistance meant more than $1 billion of economic impact in Tennessee as local governments and industries increased revenue, won contracts or reduced operating costs.
