Message from the President
Genna HurdThe month of June reminds me of three things:
  • The conclusion of another successful academic year;
  • Travel for the June meeting of the UEDA Board of Directors; and
  • The deadline for submitting UEDA Award of Excellence applications.
Our institutions are involved in so many innovative and interesting projects and the Awards of Excellence provide opportunities for us to learn from our peers.  Please consider submitting an application for the UEDA Awards; applications should be sent to Christi Bell by the end of June.  You will find the application information on http://www.universityeda.org/ under the Annual Summit.

The Board of Directors will meet on June 26-27 in San Antonio, Texas.  We will spend a significant amount of time discussing the Nov 9-11, 2008 Summit (St Pete) and the 2009 Summit which will be held in San Antonio.  We will also discuss ways to enhance your UEDA membership experiences so please let us know your ideas.

Congratulations to all UEDA members on another successful school year!

Building an Economic Development Strategy The Chronicle of Higher Education

As many regions of the United States undergo economic transitions, expectations are increasing that higher-education institutions will play critical roles in creating jobs and revitalizing local economies. In fact, many colleges are embracing economic development as a central mission, from Rochester, N.Y., to Kannapolis, N.C. But how can colleges and universities work in their local economies in ways that are responsive and meaningful? How do institutions develop a strategic plan for dealing with long-term economic challenges while managing short-term expectations of the university as economic savior? And how do they encourage faculty members to marry their research goals with real-world needs? read more>>

The farm bill entitled the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, was passed overwhelmingly (House vote 318-106 and Senate 81-15) by Congress the week of May 12 but was promptly vetoed by President Bush.  However, on May 21, the US House voted 316-108 and the Senate 82-13 to override the veto.  This was the President's ninth veto and the first one to be overridden by Congress.
