Mark your calendars for UEDA's 2008 Summit!  The Summit is entitled
Policy, Practice, & Partnership: Effective Engagement and Emerging Trends in Economic Development
and will be held on November 9 to 11, 2008.  Registration and reservation information will be forthcoming.  We are looking forward to seeing you at the Hilton St Petersburg Bayfront Hotel in November!

call for presentationsYou are invited to present a panel of speakers at UEDA's 2008 Summit.  Submit your application by May 16, 2008 to Dr. Glenn Freedman at glenn.freedman@okstate.edu.  If you have any questions, you may reach Glenn at 405-744-2325.  Each person who organizes a panel that is selected to present at the November 2008 Summit will receive a complimentary Summit registration.

UEDA Summit 2008 - Program & Registration

The agenda for the November 2008 UEDA Summit is being finalized by the Summit Planning Committee.  Some of the Summit highlights include:

Sunday, November 9, 2008 - 6 pm to 8 pm
Welcome reception
Monday, November 10, 2008 - 7:00 am
Networking Breakfast followed by exciting keynote presentation and interesting panel presentations on emerging trends, effective engagement, standards of excellence and emerging techniques in economic development.
Monday evening
Options to participate in group outings to museums and local sights of interest.
Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 7:00 am
Networking Breakfast followed by panels describing best practices in business assistance, community development, workforce development, partnership development, technology commercialization, economic development research and public policy.
Tuesday evening
Dinner banquet featuring the Best Practice Award winners.

After its two week Easter recess, Congress returned to Washington this week to face a myriad of tough issues including among others, the FY 2009 budget, war spending, Medicare, and Social Security. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security at present consume approximately 40% of the federal budget equal to 8.4% of GDP and if allowed to continue to grow at an uncontrolled annual rate will consume most of the federal budget within the next thirty years.  Unlike the housing crisis, the crisis of these issues is not immediate but rather will continue to be manifested over the next decade or so.  Washington seems to operate in a crisis mode most of the time with little interest in nonpartisan negotiations. read more>>
