From Your Pastor

Today I'm writing about two of my great loves: words and Karen Carpenter. Yesterday I was listening to Christmas music, and though I usually keep the volume at a nice low background level, I turn it up when one of the great voices comes on. As I sat listening to "Merry Christmas, Darling" for the 79th time, a line caught my attention in a way it never had before:

...I can dream and in my dreams

I'm Christmasing with you.

"Wow," I thought, "Christmasing. Now that's a great verb!"

That hasn't always been my reaction to noun-to-verb transitions. It took me awhile to become comfortable with "office" as a verb. I warmed up a little more quickly to "text," but the past tense still makes me a little tongue-tied.

Christmasing. In the song, I guess it means "celebrating," or maybe even "snuggling," two very nice ideas. But what if we allowed the word to become more than a piece of poetic license? What if Christmasing became part of our vernacular? We could use it year around, and every time we used it, we'd be reminded of all the wonder of Christmas and the birth of Christ. (I'm ignoring the possibility that the word could become trite and meaningless.)

"Lessons and Carols: The First Noel"
Rev. Karen Thompson

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.

They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. ... For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

You Have Heard Your People Cry
By Len Shelton

Exodus 3:7-15

Exodus 4:10-17

When you are asked by someone to tell them why you worship at Metropolitan Community Church, I wonder what you say that answers their question? Letʼs see how closely I can guess.

I believe you worship at MCC because you have heard your people cry. You know that MCC is not the only church that cares for your people, but you also know that MCC is the only church that cares for your people on the same level as you do, in the same way that you do.

Yes, you believe that God has raised up MCC within the Christian faith for just such a time as this. A time to change the status quo by giving a voice and acceptance in the church to your Christians brother and sisters. It is very easy to feel safe and secure here on South First Street, Austin, Texas, USA. So much so that it is too easy to pretend that your peopleʼs cry is just white noise. In your heart you know better. Millions of your people around the world long to be safe and secure on their street just as you are on South First Street, Austin, Texas, USA.

There are so many opportunities to be a part of this great movement. Is one approach more important than another? No, of course not, but I encourage you to consider the ministry of service as a member of the

Board of Directors. Certainly not every church member is a good match for such work, but you know that you are! Your people are crying out to you!

Would your election to the MCC Austin Board of Directors contribute greatly to changing the outcast status of your people? No, Iʼm sorry to say it will not. While such social injustices do not change so easily, I am reminded of the ripples created when a small pebble is dropped into a pond.

Christmas Poinsettias
Order a Poinsettia
You can purchase your poinsettia in honor or in memory of someone special in your life and help us complete our holiday decorating of the sanctuary at the same time. If you would like further information, please email or call the church office at 291-8601.

Our Prayers...
  • For all who struggle financially during this holiday season.
  • For our GLBT brothers and sisters around the world who live in fear of violence and discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • For our church as we discern next steps for our building process.
  • For all who have a mental illness and their loved ones.
From Your Pastor, continued

Here, in no particular order, are some possible definitions for the verb "to Christmas."

  • To be as faithful in attending worship year around as we are at Advent and Easter
  • To give generously, both to bring delight to those we know and to assist and encourage those we don't
  • To share the Jesus story in every season as freely and enthusiastically as we do at Christmas
  • To believe in miracles despite the naysayers
  • To spend time baking special treats and then giving them all away
  • To pay close attention to the plight of the poor and work to right inequities
  • To show compassion to those who put on a cheerful front but are actually lonely, ill, or without hope
  • To spend less time working and more time playing
  • To let children teach you a thing or two about joy, fun, love, and authenticity
  • To smile and greet people all along your way instead of being absorbed in your own tasks
  • To put your faith in Jesus Christ, and daily share in Christ's ministry of love, peace, justice, and reconciliation
  • To show appreciation to those whose efforts enhance your life but who often go unnoticed

These are some of the ones I thought of, but I bet (less than $10,000) that you can come up with many more. If you do, I'd love for you to send them to me.

Looking Forward to Christmasing in 2012,
