From Your Pastor

It was wonderful to celebrate MCC Churches' and MCC Austin's anniversary with you on Sunday. As we considered our past, present, and future together in the context of "A Place at the Table," I spent a majority of our time laying out what MCC Austin's ministry into the future might be like.

I drew largely upon the book Letting Go: Transforming Congregations for Ministry by Roy Phillips. In the foreword of the book, Michael Cowan distills Phillips's ideas into four "shifts" that must happen in churches before they are truly transformed for ministry. I'm offering those four shifts to you again in the hope that you will take them to heart, and that over the next few months we will embrace the language and vision of these shifts in a way that opens us to God's continuing transformation. Oh, what God can do with a faithful, humble, loving congregation!

"Be a Follower"

Rev. Bill Young

John 1:35--39

The next day John the Baptist was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, ``Look, the Lamb of God!''  When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.  Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, ``What do you want?''  They said, ``Rabbi'' (which means teacher), ``where are you staying?'' ``Come,'' he replied, ``and you will see.''

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.  Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.  The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.  Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).

*ASL Interpretation for the 11:00 service will be available upon request. Please send your requests via email to Courtney Webster in the church office.

Notes from the Board of Directors
We would like to say "THANKS"

Thank you to everyone for your prayers, support, and financial contributions to paying off our bond. This effort was made possible by everyone coming together for a common goal.

Speaking of coming together, there have been so many efforts to reach out to the Austin area. The Deacons asked for support for those affected by the local wildfires and you answered. They asked for your support in grocery gift cards and school supplies and you answered. What an awesome community and family we have at MCC Austin.

You all should be so proud of your support and response when asked.

You continue to show the Austin community the spirit and Christian love of MCC Austin.

Thanks from your Board of Directors

Randalls Good Neighbor Program
Help us raise money every time you shop.

Randalls believes in working together with customers to support programs that improve the quality of life in communities. They are committed to assisting non-profit organizations that are important to customers and their families.

Randalls offers customers a way to direct its donation dollars to customers favorite churches, schools or other non-profit organizations. Since the program began in the fall of 1996, Randalls/Tom Thumb has donated nearly $35 million to over 8000 participating organizations. Through the Good Neighbor Program, organizations sign up to have an exclusive account number. Members of an organization can then link the account number to their Remarkable card. The more people who link their card to the organization's account number, the more money the organization will raise.

The next time you're at Randalls, pick up a Remarkable Card application at the courtesy booth to fill out and link your card to our account # 391. Randalls will pay us a percentage of your account total, so please be sure to use your card every time you shop.

From Your Pastor, continued     PastrsMsgCont

Congregations that desire to be transformed will need to make the shift...

  1. From membership, in which congregants understand themselves as recipients of spiritual care from professional providers, to ministry, in which they carefully discern their gifts and the responsibilities to which these gifts correspond;
  2. From entitlement, in which congregants remain members because they are given standing influence over some piece of the congregation's life, to mission, in which they become mindful of calls to service both inside and outside the congregation;
  3. From education, in which congregants are consumers of a curriculum designed and delivered by others, to spiritual development, in which they interrupt the frenetic "doing" of contemporary life in order to attend to the movement of the spirit in their lives and the response the spirit asks of them;
  4. From tolerating, in which congregants politely allow otherness but keep it at arm's length, to engagement, in which they embrace diversity as a source of ongoing spiritual transformation.

I invite you to print these shifts out, learn the vocabulary, consider them in light of our particular congregation, and help us to implement them. There is no "magic" about these four; they might not even be the best four. But if we commit ourselves to their pursuit, shore up our efforts in prayer, and humbly give God thanks and praise for the growth we experience, we will surely be blessed and be a blessing to others.

Always in Hope,
