In Sue Monk Kidd's novel The Secret Life of Bees, the character named August says, "Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here."
That's one of my all-time favorite quotes, and I remembered it last night as I watched a special preview showing of The Help, a film based upon a novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett....

Sunday Morning Worship*

July 31 at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.
"Is That in the Bible? There but for the Grace of God, Go I"
Rev. Karen Thompson
John 5:2-15
Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Bethzatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids--blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me." Jesus said to him, "Stand up, take your mat and walk." At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
Now that day was a sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat." But he answered them, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Take up your mat and walk.'" They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take it up and walk'?" Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you have been made well! Do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you." The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
*Please note: Sign Language Interpretation will not be available during the month of July. Beginning in August, interpretation for the 11:00 service will be available upon request. Please send an email to Courtney Webster in the church office to request it.

From Your Pastor, continued | |
is a whole book about the power of stories. Set in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s, is a civil rights, human rights, stand up and cheer for the heroic courage of the common folk kind of book. And it is a testament to the power of story.
Right here at MCC Austin we're watching our own civil rights, human rights, stand up and cheer for the heroic courage of the common folk story continue to unfold. Two weeks ago we remembered the story of MCC Austin's journey from our beginnings in cramped living rooms, through owning our own first home, right up to today. We heard the stories of our predecessors-our forefathers and mothers and sisters and brothers-who used all their ingenuity and a whole lot of courage to buy property for MCC Austin when many realtors and sellers wouldn't even talk to a "gay church." We remembered times when schools refused to rent us their space for worship because nearby "churches" put so much pressure on them to turn us away.
I encouraged you to write another bold and brave chapter with me right now, July 2011. I challenged you to be as creative and as courageous and as faithful as the hundreds who have come before us.
And you were, of course. Oh, I know you could have done otherwise, but it would have been against your nature. You're created in the image of those who came before you and they're created in the image of God. The family resemblance is amazing!
As I write this, we haven't quite closed this new chapter, but we're very close. If you've been waiting to see what others' responses were before joining in, wait no longer. Step up now and we'll be writing "The End" on this chapter by Friday.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, give me a call. I'll tell you the whole story...
Always in Hope,

Rev. Karen Thompson Senior Pastor
