From Your Pastor |
| |
Today I'm sharing a story that one of you sent me. For those of you who will read it, be touched and inspired by it, and follow through on your inspiration, read on! For those of you who will read it, have your cynicism warnings set off, rush to Snopes and check out its authenticity (please do, I've included a link), and then dismiss it as sentimental rubbish, read on! This is a wonderful example of the stories that we love because they're true even if they're not factual.
A sobbing little girl stood near a small church from which she had been turned away because it "was too crowded." "I can't go to Sunday School, "she sobbed to the pastor as he walked by. Seeing her shabby, unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the reason and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday School class. The child was so touched that she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place to worship Jesus.
Some two years later...

"Is That in the Bible? The Seven Deadly Sins"
Rev. Karen Thompson
Scripture: proverbs 6:16-23 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to God: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that hurry to run to evil, a lying witness who testifies falsely, and one who sows discord in a family.
My child, keep your father's commandment,
and do not forsake your mother's teaching. Bind them upon your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.
*Please note: Sign Language Interpretation will not be available during the month of July. Beginning in August, interpretation for the 11:00 service will be available upon request. Please send an email to Courtney Webster in the church office to request it.

Notes from the Board of Directors
| | |
Almost 5 years ago now Rev. Elder Lillie Brock preached a sermon titled "Mission Impossible." She preached this sermon on MCC Austin's 31st Anniversary when this congregation was both celebrating Rev. Ken's appointment to Elder and greiving the fact that he would be leaving us. One of the important things to remember, she told us, is what a gift it is to be faced with challenges and setbacks that seem impossible to overcome. It is often only those "impossible" challenges that remind us of our dependence on God. It is often only those "impossible" challenges that allow us to step out in faith.
For a myriad of reasons, MCC Austin continuously finds itself offered that gift of being challenged. We're constantly given the opportunity to remember our dependence on God and to call upon deep stores of faith.
On Sunday, July 24, in a forum after the 11:00 service, we invite all of you to step up to the next test with us. We invite you to bring your prayers, your presence, and your deep faith and join us as we take up God's challenge from Malachai: "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing."
Faithfully,
MCC Austin Board of Directors

| KUT: Same-sex Parents in Texas | |
This story was posted yesterday on KUT's website and it features the Lutes-Stein family from our congregation:
By Yimou Lee for KUT and Reporting Texas
The televised celebrations surrounding the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in New York have once again put the spotlight on families headed by same-sex parents. It might come as a surprise to you that here in Texas, where a constitutional amendment has defined marriage as being only between a man and a woman, there are more same-sex parents than in many other parts of the country, including New York. Our Prayers...
- For our area struggling through the drought and its effects.
- For all still recovering from tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and other recent natural disasters.
- For our GLBT brothers and sisters around the world who live in fear of violence and discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
- For our church as we discern next steps for our building and/or building search process.
- For all who are parents--biological or chosen.

From Your Pastor, continued
Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of the poor tenement buildings and the parents called for the kind hearted pastor, who had befriended their daughter, to handle the final arrangements. As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and crumpled purse was found which seemed to have been rummaged from some trash dump. Inside was found 57 cents and a note scribbled in childish handwriting which read, "This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday school. For two years she had saved for this offering of love. When the pastor tearfully read that note, he knew instantly what he would do. Carrying this note and the cracked, red pocketbook to the pulpit, he told the story of her unselfish love and devotion. He challenged his deacons to get busy and raise enough money for the larger building.
But the story does not end there! A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It was read by a Realtor who offered them a parcel of land worth many thousands. When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered it for 57 cents. Church members made large donations. Checks came from far and wide. Within five years the little girl's gift had increased to $250,000.00 a huge sum for that time (near the turn of the century). Her unselfish love had paid large dividends.
When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up Temple Baptist Church, with a seating capacity of 3,300 and Temple University, where hundreds of students are trained. Have a look, too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of Sunday scholars, so that no child in the area will ever need to be left outside during Sunday school time. In one of the rooms of this building may be seen the picture of the sweet face of the little girl whose 57 cents, so sacrificially saved, made such remarkable history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her kind pastor, Dr. Russel H. Conwell, author of the book, "Acres of Diamonds"---a true story. Goes to show WHAT GOD CAN DO WITH 57 cents.
If you're having a hard time letting this story ring true, if you're convinced that I'm trying to "pull one over on you" or take advantage of a bully pulpit, check out its origins at SNOPES.COM .
I find the "facts" in this instance just as inspiring as the truth.
Always in Hope,

Rev. Karen Thompson Senior Pastor
