Each Tuesday, The Sunshine Cathedral (MCC) and the MCC Office of Formation and Leadership Development offer a webinar based on the Common Lectionary biblical texts for the week. The webinar provides a wonderful opportunity for preachers and teachers to consider a variety of insights and voices as they prepare for their upcoming sermons or lessons. The presenters--Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, Rev. Dr. Mona West, Rev. Brian Hutchison, Rev. BK Hipsher, and Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin--are outstanding preachers and teachers in their own right, and I never fail to come away from the sessions with ideas, inspiration, and resources.
I'm telling you about this today because I wanted to share part of this week's webinar with you... Read more...

"Walk to Emmaus"
Rev. Karen Thompson
Luke 24:13-35
Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?" He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him."
Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.
But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?" That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Twelve Step Study - Part 2 | | Saturday, June 4 from 1 - 4 p.m. at MCC Austin
This Workshop is an overview study of the Twelve Steps. Its focus is not on the drug of choice, but rather the disease of addiction. It is an open meeting, so whether you're an addict, have experience with Al-Anon, or would simply like a better idea of how the twelve steps work, all are welcome.
This Step Study is divided into four parts: Part II examines Step 4, 5 and 6. Each of the parts begins with focused meditations and prayers and introduction of the speakers. Next are the specific sessions on each Step with insightful readings on the Step. A guest speaker will share personal experience on the Step followed by an open Q & A and sharing time. Each session will be followed by a ten minute break. Finally, each attendant will receive a handout that follows this entire series and includes questions that are intended to help focus personal reflective writing on each Step.
To register, please email Courtney Webster in the church office. Back to Top |

From Your Pastor, continued | | |
Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, Sr. Pastor of The Sunshine Cathedral, shared a prayer yesterday that he had written in light of the US raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound and Bin Laden's death. I had been planning to include a response to Bin Laden's death in either the E-Link or our Sunday service, but I knew as I listened to Durrell's prayer that I could not hope to speak about this event as wisely, carefully, prophetically, or pastorally as he did.
I've included the prayer here, and you will see what I mean when you read it. I also want to let you know that you can find a daily devotional at The Sunshine Cathedral's website. I recommend it as a wonderful way to start your day.
Prayer Responding to Death of Osama Bin Laden
by Durrell Watkins, MA, MDiv, DMin
Dear God who places within our hearts a reverence for all life as well as a passion for justice: The teachers and preachers, sages and saints whom you have raised up to help raise us up have all taught the power of forgiveness, the divinity of love, and the possibility of redemption.
And so we find ourselves this week conflicted.
We have called Bin Laden our enemy; we have remembered with pain and anger the lives lost because of his terrorism. We may have wanted him to be captured to stand trial in a court of law, but that was not to be.
Perhaps his killing was a sad inevitability; and we, at least in some moments, have felt a desire to rejoice even while knowing that our higher Selves would require better of us. We wonder if we can prevail over our enemies without celebrating their downfall. We struggle to remember that even those we hate are loved by you.
We now give our complex and competing emotions to you, trusting that your grace will balance and heal them.
And as the rush of feelings begins to calm within us, draw us together as one human family to work together for peace in our time and for all time; for the sake of your goodness. Amen.
Love and Blessings,

Rev. Karen Thompson
Senior Pastor
