From Your Pastor
It's official, I've had more responses to last week's E-Link article on "fit" than I've ever had before. Some of you might think I opened up a can of worms. I disagree. I think I opened a conversation.... What Lies Beneath was a scary movie, and I don't want us writing the sequel here.
So that you know, the responses were evenly split between those of you who said, "Thanks for acknowledging that we can both move on and bless others in their moving on without blaming or fault finding." The other half of you shared with me that you thought my article was cavalier, and was meant to excuse me and the congregation from acknowledging that there might be areas of ministry and congregational life that we're failing in.
I appreciate both responses, and as I've told some of you who've written, I appreciate your honesty and thoughtfulness and have already begun to address some of your concerns so that we can do a better job of living out our faith and living in our faith community.

Sunday Morning Worship on October 24 9 & 11 a.m.
Luke 18:1-8 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.' For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

H2O ~ Living Water Worship
Sunday, October 17 at 2 p.m.
"Mind and Body"
Rev. Alycia Erickson
Romans 7:15-25
I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members
another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law
of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin.
David Blackburn will lead our singing this week with many of your favorite worship songs and hymns like "As We Gather," "All Hail the Pow'r of Jesus' Name," "Spirit," and "Change My Heart, O God."

Saturday, November 20 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. MCC Austin Size Summit Open to all members and friends of MCC Austin
A View from the Summit by Rev. Elder Lillie Brock
"What's Size Got to Do With It?" Well, that's a question the Elders have been asking all year! And without a doubt, we have discovered that, SIZE has everything to do with how a church behaves, structures itself and commits itself to ongoing transformation. Most of you know that since December of 2009, the Elders have been facilitating a 2 day experience for churches that we call The Church Size Summits. These summits have a two-fold purpose: 1. To offer thorough education to churches about Church Size Theory 2. To do a thorough assessment of every church and offer one-on-one feedback and recommendations at the summit
We are VERY pleased with the level of participation on the part of our churches and based on the feedback we have received, believe this is one of the best things that has ever been offered to our churches by the denomination. Key Things We have Learned: ·The dynamics of Church Size DEFINITELY explain why our churches are, by in large, stuck and gives concrete strategies for changing our trajectory from flat to growing! ·Of the churches we have assessed, when churches have a Stewardship Program with 3 key elements present, their per capita giving (per person per week) is $38.11 and when those key elements are not present, the per capita giving is $18.68. Do the math! ·Of the six key functions of the church, the amount and quality of programming and required staffing are the two areas where our churches have the greatest challenges. ·The collective Congregational Surveys that are part of the assessment process show clearly that our congregants are hungry for spiritual growth but perceive that our churches do not make it a priority. ·The role of the pastor, depending on size, changes so we must do a better job of matching the gifts and skill of the pastor with the appropriate size church. According to Arlin Routhage, "Size is the most obvious factor affecting congregational life!" Please include attendance at one or more of the summits as you plan for your congregation's future.

"Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About the Old Testament... But Were Afraid to Ask!"
Tonight! October 20 at 7 p.m. at MCC Austin
Why are all those 'begats' in the book of Genesis? Why is there so much violence in parts of the Old Testament? Is there grace in the Old Testament? Is the God of the Old Testament the same God of the New Testament? Why should Christians even care about the Old Testament? These are just a few of the questions many people struggle with as they attempt to understand the Old Testament as sacred scripture. Join Rev. Dr. Mona West (who has a Ph.D. in Old Testament) tonight at 7 p.m. as she explores these questions (and any others you might have!). Come even if you couldn't make it last week!

Pastor's Message
One of the things that became clear to me for the 497th time is how often we "miss" in matters of communication. Sometimes we don't even attempt to communicate, leaving others to guess at our expectations and intentions. Sometimes we'd like to communicate our thoughts, but we can't say what we mean because somewhere between our hearts, heads, and mouths are lots of living, lots of good and bad experiences, and lots of protective coating and insulation. Sometimes we can't hear what another says or means for the same reasons.
Far from wishing I had never brought up the discussion of "fit vs. fault," I'm very glad that I did. I hope I've started something, something that will continue and that will help us in our growth, maturity, and transformation as a Christian community. If you're willing to come along on this journey, I'd like to invite you to do two things:
1. Begin conversations. 2. End rumors and misinformation.
As you begin conversations with individuals and within groups, you might agree to follow these guidelines set out by our MCC Theologies Team in Holy Conversations:
"Try On"
Be willing to try on ideas, ways of thinking or being that you may never have considered before, even or perhaps especially if you have a gut instinct to reject it out of hand.
"It's OK to disagree. It's Not OK to shame, blame, and attack self or others" Engaging our differences is something we want to do and that we benefit from, but shaming, blaming or attacking ourselves or others is not a helpful way of engaging difference. Agree not to shame, blame, or attack others or ourselves.
"Self Focus -- I language"
Focus on your own thoughts and feelings without universalizing them or assuming others/all people agree. Use "I" language to share your experiences, perspectives, and opinions. Be aware of how you are feeling and ask yourself what your feelings might be telling you. Share your feelings when appropriate.
"Practice Both/And Thinking" Not every question has an either/or right answer. The opposite of a profound truth may be another profound truth, not an opposing truth. "BUT" is a warning that Both/And thinking is not being practiced.
Be Aware of "Intent/Impact"
Someone may intend one thing with a comment, but the impact may be very different. Take responsibility for both parts of the equation. If something impacts you negatively, be willing to ask if that is what the person intended.
Also be willing to end rumors and misinformation. In our sermon series on intimacy, I shared with you that During World War II, concern about the spread of misinformation led the government to create a Rumor Project in the Office of War Information. As soon as misinformation was encountered in the media or in casual conversations, the Office of War Information distributed official releases with the accurate information to correct any misunderstandings. The impact was immediate and positive. Fear and anxiety among the citizens at home and the troops abroad decreased noticeably once correct information was shared. Our congregation could certainly benefit from having even a handful of people committed to being "Rumor Deadenders."
Here's my final word on the subject for today, and I owe it to one of you who responded to last week's article with honesty and a willingness to help make MCC Austin an ever more loving, thriving, witnessing community: "Remember, we're all in this alone together!
Love and Blessings,

Rev. Karen Thompson Senior Pastor
