From Your Pastor
One of our Staff and Board priorities is developing a complete "marketing plan" for MCC Austin. People continue to tell us they've never heard of MCC Austin, and that tells us we must be intentional about getting the word out. We need to create consistency in our print materials and saturate the community with our MCC flame logo to increase awareness of MCC Churches in general and MCC Austin in particular. We need to take every opportunity to drive people to our website, and when they get there, they need to find it user friendly and geared towards welcoming visitors and helping them get to know us.
Last week, thanks to the work of Matt Hardman and our marketing team, we distributed an official, professional quality press release highlighting the events of our 35th Anniversary Weekend.
Here's where it gets interesting. The press release led off with "Gay Austin Church Celebrating Thirty-Five Years."

Sunday Morning Worship on October 3 9 & 11 a.m. "Building God's 'House' on a Firm Foundation"
Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson
Psalm 127 - The Message
A Pilgrim Song of Solomon 1-2 If God doesn't build the house, the builders only build shacks. If God doesn't guard the city, the night watchman might as well nap. It's useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don't you know God enjoys giving rest to those God loves?
3-5 Don't you see that children are God's best gift? the fruit of the womb God's generous legacy? Like a warrior's fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth. Oh, how blessed are you parents, with your quivers full of children! Your enemies don't stand a chance against you; you'll sweep them right off your doorstep.

H2O ~ Living Water Worship Sunday, October 3 at 2 p.m.
Join us this week as we continue our journey through the Book of Romans with Jason Webster, M.Div. Romans 5:1-11
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person-though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

MCC Austin Volunteer Opportunities
Currently MCC Austin is in need of several office volunteers as well as Special Event Set-up/Take-down Crews.
Office Volunteers are an important part of helping MCC Austin to run smoothly behind the scenes. Volunteers work closely with the office staff to keep up with the many administrative tasks necessary to keep us functioning efficiently. Office volunteer opportunities are available from Tuesday - Friday. The shifts available are between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Duties may include: Answering the phones, entering data into the software system, preparing mailings, assisting with various activities, assisting with filing and paperwork, participating in special projects, and organizing event materials. Skill Requirements: Good general organization skills and comfortable with computers.
We are also in need of Special Event Set-up/Take-down Crew. If you have wanted to serve MCC Austin but do not have the ability to commit to a regularly scheduled volunteer opportunity, this might be a good fit for you. We need people that can be available for on-call setting up or taking down of different special events. If you volunteer to serve on this team you would receive monthly notices of upcoming events, you would then check your personal schedule and reply if you are available to come in and help. You would have prior notice as well as flexibility.
If you are able to fill one of these immediate needs, please contact Courtney Webster at the office or by email.

Holy Conversations: An Invitation to Faithful Dialogue
In our ongoing attempt to provide you with more opportunities for spiritual growth and personal connection, we are offering Holy Conversations, a series of theological discussion guides prepared by the MCC Theologies Team.
On the first Wednesday of each month, we will engage in open, safe, affirming discussions about our understandings of these faith topics: October: Sexuality & Spirituality November: Ecumenical / Inter-religious Issues December: Trans-formations & Trans Experiences January: Baptism February: Holy Communion March: Who is Jesus? April: Global Justice May: Ecclesiology (Church)
Rev. Thompson will be the host for each of these conversations, but others will share in facilitating our gatherings also.
Holy Conversations is open to everyone who is still seeking and who enjoys seeking in the company of others. You do not need to be a member of MCC to attend, and you do not need to attend every gathering. You are welcome to join us whenever a topic strikes your interest or whenever you want to spend time with other people in a safe, positive, meaningful way. You are encouraged to bring friends.
At this time, we have received an offer from one of our centrally located couples to host most or even all of our monthly conversations. If anyone else wishes to offer your home or another venue (apartment complex community room, conference room, etc.) please send an email to Rev. Karen Thompson. We will ask that those attending bring simple snacks to share so that we can impose a little less on our hosts' hospitality.
The address and directions to our October gathering will be available in this Sunday's worship program. If you are unable to be with us Sunday, you may send an email to Courtney Webster, and she will send directions to you.

Pastor's Message
I could preach a year's worth of sermons, and I'm sure you have a year's worth of opinions about a press release headed "Gay Church...." Strong feelings exist on both the "for" and "against" sides of the aisle. Here are some of them:
*We're a Christian church, not a "gay" church. *As other churches become more accepting, Austin doesn't need a "gay" church. *We exist because of the need for a GLBTQ affirming church. *I don't feel comfortable bringing my parents and straight friends to a church that pushes "gay" all the time. *I came here because I heard it was a "gay" church where all orientations and genders are accepted.
There was a time when I could easily have been swayed by either of these arguments. However, those days have become fewer and fewer over the last few years, and they've all but disappeared over the last few months. Today, I'd be fine if the "gay" in our press release was two font sizes larger, bolded, underlined, and in italics. Shoot, I'd pay extra to have it in color: seven colors, rainbow.
My complete conversion has come largely as a result of four recent experiences.
1. I had the pleasure and privilege of traveling to Iowa to legally marry a same-gender couple. I signed a legal marriage certificate. People came up to the couple in restaurants and other public places and congratulated them. While walking in a park, we passed an outdoor wedding reception in full swing, complete with signs proclaiming "Congratulations Sherrie and Brandi!" Unlike people in California, who briefly experienced the joy and freedom of same-gender legal marriages and then had it taken away, we Texans are mostly numb to the prejudice that is daily directed at us. We've become largely inured to the unfairness of being denied such a basic, human right.
2. I was asked to submit an Advent reflection for a religious organization's annual booklet of Advent and Christmas devotionals. I was assured that voices outside the mainstream were welcomed in the publication. However, my devotional was deemed too controversial, too gay, to be included. Bottom line: The risk was too great that homophobic people might withhold their contributions from the organization if the organization appeared sympathetic to, much less supportive of, GLBTQ people.
3. I have sat with too many of our members lately whose hearts have been broken anew by the harsh judgments and subsequent pulling away of family members. In every one of these cases, the judgments were pronounced by people whose rejection of their GLBTQ family members were taught or supported by their Christian churches and/or pastors.
4. A "care team" of sorts has recently formed here at the church to support a friend of our congregation who faces numerous challenges in her daily life. The greatest challenge, however, is not a need for food or shelter or medical care or financial resources. Her greatest challenge is that the programs in place to provide her with services identify her as male, treat her as male, arrange living quarters in male facilities, and are not prepared to meet her needs as a transgender woman. This leads to pain and confusion on top of pain and confusion.
Though we might be tempted and able to forget such unfairness for long stretches of time, this is our reality. But not all of it. MCC Austin, a "gay church," is also part of our reality. Thank God.
You don't have to be concerned that all of a sudden worship services are going to sound more like pride rallies. You needn't worry that faithful, Christian theology will be replaced by GLBTQ rhetoric or, gasp, "gay agendas." In fact, you probably won't notice any changes at all--unless our press releases bring in hundreds of new people!
Friends, I hope you can trust me on this: What matters ultimately is not what we call ourselves--it's how we live and how we love....That's the word that will get out.
Always in Hope,

Senior Pastor
