Sunday Worship on August 15 9 & 11 a.m. "Intimate Friends" Rev. Karen Thompson During supper, Jesus, knowing that God had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord-and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them."

H2O ~ Living Water Worship Sunday, August 15 at 2 p.m.
Rev. Alycia Erickson
Join us Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. as we discuss the passage from Mark listed below. We'll also enjoy some favorite songs: "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," "Open Our Eyes," and learn a new song, Go My Children." Come to a place where you can meet Christ, not expectations.
After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, "What were you discussing out on the road?" But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, "Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else." Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, "Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also God who sent me."
John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn't in our group." "Don't stop him!" Jesus said. "No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us. If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck."

Results Are in for Being Church~Building Community
On Sunday, August 1, we celebrated God's goodness and gave thanks for our successful capital campaign which brought in pledges and one-time gifts totaling $1,024,936.40. Amazing! God is good and God's people are generous! Most of you want to know what happens next, and we're happy to tell you. Here is a brief overview of what we've done until now and of the next several months: - We identified the top 4 priorities for our new facility:
· Worship space for 500-600 · Adequate parking for 500-600 · Gathering and greeting space · Classrooms and multi-purpose meeting spaces
- The Board of Directors approved a budget of $1.5 million based on our campaign total and our plan to borrow $500,000 when we refinance our existing bonds.
- Here is a general timeline for next steps:
· Receive detailed floor plan and cost analysis (August) · Finalize refinance and new loan (August-September) · Solicit contractor bids and hire contractor (August-September)
-
After that, we will launch Phase I of our building plan which includes the sanctuary, gathering space, nursery, classrooms, offices and parking spaces. As we begin the permitting process, etc., much of the early activity will be "invisible" to you. As soon as we receive confirmation of groundbreaking and other dates, we will let you know.

Holy Conversations: An Invitation to Faithful Dialogue
In our ongoing attempt to provide you with more opportunities for spiritual growth and personal connection, we will be offering Holy Conversations, a series of theological discussion guides prepared by the MCC Theologies Team. This is one of many new resources that our denomination is providing to local congregations.
Beginning on Wednesday, September 1, and continuing the first Wednesday of every month for the next 9 months, we will engage in open, safe, affirming discussions about our understandings of a variety of faith topics. These topics vary from "Ministry: Clergy and Lay" to "Baptism" and from "Sexuality and Spirituality" to "Global Justice." Rev. Thompson will be the host for each of these conversations, but others will share in facilitating our gatherings also.
Holy Conversations is open to everyone who is still seeking and who enjoys seeking in the company of others. You do not need to be a member of MCC to attend, and you do not need to attend every gathering. You are welcome to join us whenever a topic strikes your interest or whenever you want to spend time with other people in a safe, positive, meaningful way. You are encouraged to bring friends.
Our plan now is to alternate our gathering place each month between north and south locations. If anyone wishes to offer your home or another venue (apartment complex community room, conference room, etc.) please send an email to Rev. Karen Thompson.
Look for the complete schedule of topics next week in E-Link.

Pastor's Message

For some time now, what feels like it has been saving my life, is the wisdom and confession of Henri Nouwen. Henri Nouwen is sort of a "human MRI." He has passed now, but while he was alive he had the talent, and the temerity, for turning himself inside out and capturing the whole miraculous mess on paper. Over and over Nouwen promises that if we seek affirmation, appreciation, validation, love and encouragement only from other people (as he himself so often did), we will find our hearts breaking again and again. Only when we seek to find the validation, the unconditional love, and the security that we need in that deep place within us where God dwells, will we actually find those things.
BUT at the same time Nouwen is telling us this, at the same time we're struggling with doubts about whether we can "reorient" ourselves away from human affirmation and toward God's affirmation and agonizing over what we might have to give up, Nouwen puts a hand on our shoulder and says, "You don't have to give up anything to find everything in God." Further, he suggests, those men and women from whom we do receive affirmation, love, and encouragement, are a large part of the "everything" that God gives us.
This is what Nouwen offers in The Inner Voice of Love:
The love that [comes] to you in particular, concrete human friendships and that awakened your dormant desire to be completely and unconditionally loved was real and authentic. It does not have to be denied as dangerous and idolatrous. A love that comes to you through human beings is true, God-given love and needs to be celebrated as such....When you try to die to that love in order to find God's love, you are doing something God does not want....So stop trying to die to the particular real love you have received. Be grateful for it and see it as what enabled you to open yourself to God's first love.
These are the things we'll explore Sunday morning as we begin the sermon series Shared Intimacies with "Intimate Friendships." I hope you'll come and worship with us.
I hope you'll bring a friend, as well.
Love and Blessings,
Rev. Karen Thompson
Sr. Pastor
