By the time I write to you next, MCC Churches will have voted on whether to adopt a proposed structure change that would have major implications for all of us. I wanted to share my thoughts about these changes with you today in hopes that you will review the proposed changes for yourselves and "pray with specificity and thoughtfulness." (Ever read "The Monkey's Paw"?)
In my own attempt to be honest and transparent (two qualities that the proposed structure prioritizes), I want you to know that I have been fully in support of the new structure since I first saw it. Part of that support stems from my experience with our current structure.

"Eyes on Jerusalem"

Luke 9:51-62

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Chosen One has no place to lay his head."  He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."  Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family." Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

News from Family Equality Council:
Chrisler Attends CNN Screening of Gary + Tony Have a Baby (Airs June 24 at 8 p.m. eastern)
Last night Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council, attended the New York screening of CNN's June 24 news documentary, Gary + Tony Have a Baby, which follows two gay men through the surrogacy process. Chrisler participated in a panel discussion on gay parenting following the screening. "CNN did an excellent job of telling the story of two gay men having a family," said Chrisler. "The piece shows that gay parents are good parents. Importantly, the documentary underscores how diverse American families now are... Sadly, this piece is sure to spur the tiny minority opposed to gay parenting to speak out (loudly). We encourage all LGBT parents, prospective parents, and the entire LGBT community to tune in next week, and then tell their own stories--which is what ultimately changes hearts, minds and laws."...

Washington Times: Study finds teens raised by lesbians are well-adjusted.
A study that shows favorable outcomes for teens raised by lesbian mothers is strengthening calls for acceptance of gay families, while opponents say such research is too flawed to be believed.
"This study is yet another confirmation that gay parents are good parents," said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council in Boston, referring to a June 7 study in Pediatrics. Ms. Chrisler, who is married to Cheryl Jacques and is a mother of twins, said the study adds to 30 years of research that shows that children raised by gay parents have outcomes equal to or even better than other children. "There is no legitimate reason" for states or agencies to prevent gays and lesbians from raising or adopting children, she said. "Gay parents and straight parents are really no different."...

My observations of our current structure suggest two basic challenges: 1) We have asked our leaders, especially our Elders, to take on such a huge number and diversity of tasks with such limited resources that we set them up for failure. This is not at all to say that they have failed, just that we have established less than optimum conditions for success. 2) Our current structure and our current bylaws are not in alignment. Our last structure revision was not accompanied by revisions in our bylaws. This sometimes leads to discrepancies between what we want or need to do and what we can do. For example, our current structure has us electing Elders whose portfolios (experience and training) match particular areas of need in our missional areas, not geographic areas. As a result of this, we have begun to use the title "Elder Elected by a Region" instead of "Elder Serving a Region." Our bylaws, however, still require that we nominate and elect Elders whose primary responsibility is to serve particular regions and support the local congregations in those regions.

The new structure proposal addresses both of those concerns fully. You can see how by visiting the MCC Structure Review site.

Even more exciting to me is the way that the current proposal calls for us to structure the denomination very similarly to the way our local congregations are structured. Our Moderator, in effect, becomes our Pastor, elected by the General Conference, ie. the congregation. The role of the Moderator is as follows: The Moderator, as MCC's spiritual leader, will be the primary spokesperson, visionary and futurist and to advance the mission and vision of MCC worldwide through the exercise of prophetic challenge, creativity, spiritual authority, and leadership. In the proposed structure, the Moderator also will serve as head of staff and MCC's Chief Executive Officer.

The new Governing Board becomes, effectively, the Board of Directors of MCC, and their responsibilities correspond to a local Board's responsibilities: 1) Policy Governance 2) Strategic Direction 3) Fiduciary Accountability 4) Management Oversight.

The Board of Elders will be dissolved in its current form, though we will continue to have Elders who serve in a pastoral role and direct the spiritual life and journey of MCC. Collectively, the Elders will serve with the Moderator to form a Council of Elders. To continue the analogy, we can say that the Council of Elders is the pastoral staff of a local congregation.

Bottom line, I feel the new structure represents a faithful commitment to ensuring the relevance and vitality of MCC Churches. I believe it has been discerned through prayer and shared wisdom from within and without our denomination. I believe it is founded on current and important information about church dynamics, especially in relation to size and size transitions. I believe it honors traditions, our own traditions as well as those of Christ's Church through the centuries.

Perfect? Of course not. But I believe it is a faithful first step in a good direction, and I can say with Paul, that "I am confident of this very thing, that God who began a good work in us will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ."

See, we don't have to be perfect, just faithful.

Sr. Pastor
