Here is a favorite story of mine from Teaching Your Children About God by David J. Wolpe:

A boy and his father were walking along a road when they came across a large stone. The boy said to his father, "Do you think if I use all my strength, I can move this rock?" His father answered, "If you use all your strength, I am sure you can do it." The boy began to push the rock...  Read More...

"Where Do We Draw the Line?"
Rev. Elder Diane Fisher

John 20:19-31
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As God has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe."

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Chosen of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

"Our mission in our ministry is to share our stories with others so that they may experience the love that God has for everyone. Our ministry was formed in January 2005 when we decided to answer a call that had been tugging at our hearts for several years. We share our personal journeys with Christ through our music and stories!"

Susie is a singer-songwriter and released her newest CD in 2009. HUD Press Release: Collecting Data on LGBT Americans
HUD LAUNCHES WEBSITE TO GATHER PUBLIC COMMENT ON FIRST-EVER LGBT HOUSING DISCRIMINATION STUDY
Online 'suggestion box' seeks to inform HUD on design of historic research

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today launched a new website to allow citizens to offer comment on the design of an unprecedented national study that will examine housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. While there have been no national assessments of housing discrimination targeting the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) community, there is a body of evidence suggesting this sort of bias exists. HUD recently hosted town hall meetings in Chicago, San Francisco and New York City to solicit feedback on how it might approach such ground-breaking research. This 'online suggestion box' is intended to offer the public throughout the U.S. an opportunity to comment on HUD's study. Read the complete article here.

CONNECT:  FOUR SHORT PLAYS
By Allan Baker
Directed by Theresa Leckbee
April 1 to 17 at the Off Center, June 4 at the Rollins Theatre of the Long Center as part of Austin Pride 2010
Connect is a two hour program of short plays focused on the need to "connect":  across the generations in a family (Voices), at the most important moment of your life (Five Minutes), at a critical point in a relationship (A Midsummer Night's Conversation), or even online on Saturday night (Click)!  Though the program's last play, A Midsummer Night's Conversation, is new and rather daring, the other three have been previously produced:  Click and Voices at Austin's FronteraFest in 2008 and 2007.  Five Minutes was a FronteraFest "Best of the Fest" selection in 2006 and was produced for three weeks in New York City in 2006 as part of Emerging Artists Theatre's Fall Festival of Short Plays.  Nominated by Emerging Artists Theatre as part of a nation-wide competition of plays from producing companies, it was produced again in New York City in June of 2007 as part of the Samuel French Festival of Off Off-Broadway One Act Plays.  A ten-minute play based on the last scene, ...last and always, was produced by NativeAliens Theatre Collective as part of their Short Stories series during the 2009 New York City Gay Pride celebration.  Pastor's Message
 continued...
pastormessage
Exerting himself as much as he could, he pushed and pushed. The rock did not move. Discouraged, he said to his father, "You were wrong. I can't do it." His father placed his arm around the boy's shoulder and said, 'No, son. You didn't use all your strength--you didn't ask me to help."

Now, it could be easy in this day and time to find all kinds of fault with this story: Was the father too glib? The child too patronized? The meaning too transparent?

Forget all that for a minute. Just take the story at its word. Don't think about double entendre, hidden meanings, the inadequacy of typed words, or anything else that might interfere with your ability just to sigh, nod your head slowly, and whisper "Aww."

Recently, I ran upon a rock I didn't think I could move; but I needed it moved. Without any conscious thought I prayed, then sent an email, then walked over to talk with my friend who was nearby, then made a phone call. Though I wasn't aware of it at the time, I had done exactly the thing the boy in the story didn't do: I used all my strength. (Or at least a good part of it.) I didn't call on people because I'm smarter than the boy or because I've read this story before. I reached out to my strong ones because I've failed so often on my own to move those stones that I don't waste my time anymore.

One of my strong ones encouraged me to trust myself and my instincts. One of my strong ones shared what she had learned from one of her strong ones. One began to pray.

I won't tell you that the rock I was confronted by suddenly seemed to get smaller. I won't pretend it politely stepped off my path. I won't suggest it got lighter or I could suddenly see my way over or around it. I will just tell you that "all my strength" had both the rock and me surrounded, and I liked my odds much better after that.

Grace and Peace,
Rev. Karen Thompson
Sr. Pastor
