Greetings!
From spending the day touring our scenic wine
country, to hiking and biking our trails, to
experiencing the fun and fantasy of the
Sterling Renaissance Festival-summer
activities in Cayuga County stretch as far as
the eye can see. Here's a quick update on
what we've been doing to entice visitors to
choose Cayuga County as their next vacation
destination.
Tourism Window Gets Dressed Up
|
|
A twelve-foot mural of Cayuga County,
created by artist Dana Ryan of Union Springs,
was recently installed in the side window of
the tourism office. The colorful and vibrant
mural depicts some of the many great things
to do in Cayuga County. Please take time to
enjoy it next time you stroll down Dill Street!

Farms, Food & Fun Geocache Adventure Debuts on Routes 5&20
|
|
The Routes 5 and 20 Promotion Group has
launched a new initiative for 2008 designed
to attract visitors to this historic roadway.
The "Farms, Food, and Fun Geocache Adventure"
is a modern day treasure hunt, combining
tools of the high tech GPS (Global
Positioning System) unit with a bit of old
fashioned detective work. Twenty caches or
'treasure boxes' have been hidden at
strategic points within the Routes 5 and 20
corridor and visitors and residents are
challenged to locate at least five of the
caches to be eligible for a grand prize
valued at $520. For more details, visit www.routes5and20.com
or the official geocache web site, www.geocaching.com.

Big Things, Small Packages
|
|
It's a classic struggle in marketing: how to
get across as much information as possible
with the smallest footprint. The new
mini-map created by the Cayuga County Office
of Tourism in partnership with the Stardust
Foundation and The Citizen newspaper helps
solve this challenge. The new trip builder
mini map provides a full color customized map
on one side and tourism information on the
reverse which folds down to a credit card
size cover measuring only 3 3/8" X 2 1/8".
The convenient size of the map, when folded,
lets visitors carry a lot of information in
their pockets, wallets and purses, plus they
are something that people tend to hang on to,
partly because of the novelty, but also
because of the information contained in their
compact size.

Tourism Board Elects New Directors
|
|
At their annual meeting on June 3, 2008, the
Cayuga County Convention and Visitors Bureau
elected two new directors to their board,
Sean Lattimore, co-owner of The Springside
Inn as well as the Holland House and The
Point at Sand Beach and Sherry Saben-Wolford,
co-owner of Burritt's Caf in Weedsport which
serves organic fair trade coffee and light
meals. Both Sean and Sherry will serve
two-year terms. Sadly, the board said
good-bye to Cheryl Longyear and Fred
Richardson who served terms from 2001-2008.

Culinary Tourism
|
|
Culinary Tourism is a hot, new niche in
cultural travel that blends food, beverages
(particularly wine) and travel into a unique
visitor experience that holds huge potential
for development in the Finger Lakes. Finger
Lakes Culinary Bounty is an organization that
works to promote culinary tourism by linking
the regions' restaurants, farms, wineries,
and small-scale food processors to provide
residents and visitors with fresh, locally
produced, creative cuisine, grown or made in
the Finger Lakes. On June 16th, the Cayuga
County Office of Tourism hosted a meeting for
tourism partners to learn about Finger Lakes
Culinary Bounty. For those that are
interested, but were unable to attend this
informational meeting, please take a moment
to visit www.fingerlakesculinarybounty.org
to learn about this program which not only
enhances tourism but also contributes to the
economic well-being of area farms,
food-producers, wineries, businesses and
communities.

New Cayuga County Fishing Guide
|
|
Cayuga County is the perfect year round
destination for anglers in the Finger Lakes
Region. With the great Lake Ontario to the
north, Cayuga Lake to the west, Owasco Lake
in the middle and Skaneateles Lake to the
east plus Duck Lake, Cross Lake, Otter Lake,
Lake Como and the Seneca River/Erie Canal, we
have more freshwater coastline than any other
county in NYS. Add in our numerous streams,
ponds and tributaries and you'll find
world-class fishing second to none in Cayuga
County. To 'lure' more anglers to Cayuga
County, the Office of Tourism has published a
new "Fishing Guide for Cayuga County." The
brochure includes listings of fishing
charters and marinas, campgrounds, major
fishing derbies, and information on each
waterway including locations of public boat
launches. Listings for other water
activities such as scuba diving and sailing
are also included. The new guide will be
distributed at sports and outdoor shows
throughout the northeast and in response to
inquiries for fishing information.

Coco's Corner
|
|
American Water Spaniel, Coco, the official
spokes "dog" for Cayuga County's "Lake
Effect" campaign is hosting her own "Coco's
Corner" on the www.TourCayuga.com
web site. Coco will offer tips and advice
to locals and visitors on great things to see
and do in Cayuga County. Coco knows that
with 14% of all adults (29.1 million)
traveling with a pet on a trip of 50 miles or
more, one-way, her insight on things to see
and do in Cayuga County is pretty important!
