Keynote Speakers

We are delighted to welcome the following speakers:

Michael Resnick, PhD, is Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health and holds the Gisela and E. Paul Konopka Chair in Adolescent Health and Development at the University of Minnesota. He directs the CDC-funded Healthy Youth Development-Prevention Research Center, engaged in research, training and advocacy with community partners on health and risk behaviors, resiliency and protective factors in the lives of young people, with a particular emphasis on sexual behaviors, teen pregnancy prevention, and violence. 

Glynis Shea is a Communications Coordinator for the Konopka Institute at the University of Minnesota. As a former Vice President at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising San Francisco, Glynis crafted communication plans and advertising strategies, fielded national market research efforts, and managed the production of TV, print, and radio advertising. At the Konopka Institute, Ms. Shea works with social workers, youth workers, public health professionals, state systems executives, researchers, and medical practitioners to build public will for youth development through effective communications.

Adrian Sundiata is the Co-CEO of Joe Black and Associates, and the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Mecklenburg County Health Department and the award-winning Male Involvement Program.  In addition to his role with the Health Department, Adrian has sat on committees and facilitated programs for the YMCA, YWCA, Empowerment Exchange, No Grease Barbershops, Substance Abuse Prevention Services, Work Force Development Board Charlotte, Special Olympics, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, and Project Alpha. 


Participants will also be able to choose from a wide variety of breakout sessions.  Scheduled topics include Reducing Stress for Teenage Parents, Effective Sexuality Education for Latino Youth, Internet Safety, Effective Programming for Boys, and much more!

APPCNC's Annual Awards!


June Stallings Award:  Recognizes an individual who has demonstrated long term, creative efforts on behalf of adolescent pregnancy prevention in North Carolina.

APPCNC Award:  Presented to a local council, task force, public or private agency, or volunteer organization in North Carolina whose program objectives are based upon well-defined problems and appropriate interventions that can be measured for their effectiveness in preventing adolescent pregnancy.

Youth Achievement Award:  Presented to the most outstanding project in North Carolina that involves youth in the execution of a project whose objective is the prevention of adolescent pregnancy.

 

Applications may be self-nominated, and must be received by March 14, 2008.  Contact Melinda DeJongh at 919-226-1880 x108 or mdejongh@appcnc.org for an award application.  Awards will be presented on the second day of the conference: May 16, 2008.


Hotel Information

The conference will be held at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, NC, just off I-40.  Room rates are $122 per night; ask for the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention room block.  The deadline for room reservations is April 15, 2008.
