APPCNC & The National Campaign to Prevent Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy Present:
Investing in NC Youth 2008: Spotlight on Prevention
A Chance for the Media to see what great things can happen when Youth & Schools work together to prevent teen pregnancy
THOMASVILLE - February 27, 2008 - Every 28 minutes a North Carolina teen girl becomes pregnant.  Over 19,000 teens became pregnant in 2006.  Teen pregnancy costs North Carolina $312 million dollars annually. Recently Jamie Lynn Spears, 16 year old star of Nickelodeon's Zoey 101, recently announced she was pregnant.  What can we do in North Carolina to prevent teen pregnancy and promote prevention in schools?

On February 27, Bill Albert of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen & Unwanted Pregnancy will join the Thomasville Teen PEP youth in spotlighting what schools can do to prevent teen pregnancy.  Following the presentation, media will have the chance to ask questions of a panel consisting of teen pregnancy prevention professionals, school officials and a teenager.

Teen pregnancy is becoming an issue for North Carolina again.  Since 2003, rates have ceased falling and plateaued.  This follows a trend of falling rates since 1990.  Thomasville uses abstinence based education to great effect, working with students at risk for teen pregnancy.  This event is an excellent chance to speak with providers, policy experts and students involved in this program.  We encourage you to take advantage of this in light of the Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy revelation and continuing focus on teen pregnancy and the risks involved with this issue.

The prevention of adolescent pregnancy is the business of the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina (APPCNC). We believe a cooperative approach between public agencies, private organizations and community volunteers can maximize prevention efforts. APPCNC has been working for North Carolina since 1985.
