HB 879 Undergoes Some Changes In Order to Survive
Tell your Legislators to either support the Bill or go on record as opposing teen health
Raleigh - HB 879 is undergoing some amendments.  Late last week it became apparent that without modification, HB 879 was going to die in the Education Committee. In the spirit of "something is better than nothing" HB 879 is going to be amended to help improve the chance it will pass out of the Education Committee and onto the floor of the House in time to beat the Crossover deadline.   The current news is that it will be heard on Tuesday May 22 at 11 am in the House Education Committee.  We need to rally support before that meeting.

The Opposition is Circling the Wagons
Abstinence Until Marriage supporters have been calling, writing and deluging the representatives with calls to kill this bill.  And the delays in hearing the bill thus far show that they're succeeding.  The Representatives need to be told and shown that the majority of North Carolinians know that Abstinence Only needs an overhaul.  The majority knows that teens need information, not fear and shame.  The majority knows that we can't afford to bury our heads in the sand any longer. The majority of North Carolinians support Abstinence-Based Comprehensive Sexual Health Education.
What Do We Do to Make This Pass?
At this point, we're targeting certain members of the Education Committee to ensure that the Bill passes out of Committee and onto the House floor.  Our swing voters are:

Rep. Bruce Goforth           919-733-5746    (D-Buncombe)
Rep. Mary McAllister         919-733-5959    (D-Cumberland)
Rep. Marian McLawhorn    919-733-5757    (D-Pitt)
Rep. Earline Parmon         919-733-5829    (D-Forsyth)
Rep. Ray Rapp                  919-733-5732    (D-Haywood, Madison, Yancey)
Rep. Edith D. Warren        919-715-3023    (D-Martin, Pitt)
Rep. W.A. Wilkins            919-715-0850    (D-Durham, Person)

We need to call these Reps and let them know to support HB 879.  If we can get these representatives to vote yes, then we can get HB 879 to the floor and finally get the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the youth of North Carolina!

What Are the Stakes?
Why does this debate matter?  Why is it important that we support adding comprehensive sexual health education to the abstinence message in North Carolina?  What will happen if I don't call my representative?

Nothing.  Nothing will happen.  Nothing will change.  Teens will go on hearing messages like this:
"A guy who wants to respect girls is distracted by sexy clothes and remembers her for one thing. Is it fair that guys are turned on by their senses and women by their hearts?" (Sex Respect, Student Workbook, p. 94. Sex Respect, The Option of True Sexual Freedom (2001 edition), written by Coleen Kelly Mast, distributed by Respect, Inc., Homer Glen, IL.)

Do we really want this to be our legacy to our children?  The only person who can change it is you.  Call the representatives.  Urge them to vote for HB 879.  The children believe in you.  Make them proud.
