Paige Dillabough

My name is Paige and I am  a eighteen  year old, cancer survivor.  In 2003 I was a normal 8 year old who enjoyed playing soccer, highland, tap and jazz dancing and activities like regular kids.  I started getting sick in October of 2002 and after fighting what was thought  to be a severe flu  for a period of time, I also began to also get confused and had some difficulty with my balance, so they suspected it was more than the flu.

We were presented with the news that every parent fears, I  had a very large tumour in my brain.

Through the extensive cancer treatments and long, painful and frustrating therapy sessions with a
variety of rehabilitation specialists, I tried to keep a sense of humour and everyone says that
my spirit  and sense of humour made me strong again.  I tried not to complain and instead of focusing on the fact  that I couldn't go out and play with my friends, or dance anymore I turned my energy and efforts into  crafts that I sold to raise money for the charities that were helping me through my battle.

When kids like me go through an experience like this, we need help and so do our families.  There are
so many expenses that people don't think of and so many things that we need so we can stay  on top
of our school work and in touch with our friends.

My family was introduced to CANDLELIGHTERS shortly after I had my surgery and they became a
huge part of our life.

I still continue to be a regular visitor to the clinics at CHEO because of side effects from the tumor,
the radiation and the chemotherapy but I am in school full time and try to be very active in my
Community.  I love to organize charity events, fund raising events and do things to help other kids.
I have been honoured with various community awards:  United Way Community Builder Award,
CAYFO COURAGE AWARE, YOUTH CITIZEN of the YEAR AWARD and most recently HERO OF HOPE.
My hope is that I will encourage other kids my age to get involved and to find a charity that means
something special to them and GET INVOLVED.

I try and live by my favourite quote:
"Cherish your Yesterdays, Dream your tomorrows, but LIVE your TODAYS!

Thank You's.....

Laurie Turriff, Nash Nesbitt-Johnston and Tammy Johnston
Laurie Turriff, owner of the Iroquois-based Something Old Something New, donated $800 to Candlelighters. Turriff first heard of the non-profit organization when a relative's son was diagnosed with cancer. She pointed out that while there are many charity organizations focusing on different types of cancer for adults, there are "few that help out the children and their families."

Two fundraisers were held recently in Stittsville in support of Tori's Helping Hand Fund.

~Opal by Crystal Nails in Stittsville held a 3 day fundraiser on July 16-18th.  30% of all profits for the 3 days were donated and they raised $700. Thanks very much Lucky and Amy Tran!

~A group of kids in the Stittsville neighborhood held a lemonade stand on July 21-23rd each afternoon in Coyote Park.  $163 was raised!  Thank you William Kuzniarz, Sarah Kuzniarz, Emma Boudreau and Kathleen Morden.

We would like to send a special thank you to one of our member family's, Negar and Koko, who donated five playbooks to Candlelighters' CyberKids program.  The kids will love them!
