Smiling Siblings is a program for the brothers and sisters of children with cancer.  Meeting one Saturday per month, kids from ages 4+ get together to create beautiful watercolour creations with the help of facilitator Jennifer Nicol.  This program is especially for the siblings of cancer patients, getting them together and recognizing that they are important and not forgotten when families are travelling the childhood cancer journey.

The hours in hospital sure can be long for the kids, both while in-patients and out-patients.  Many children will spend weeks and even months in hospital when diagnosed with cancer.  And even after they are discharged, must visit the clinic regularly as part of their treatment protocol.

The kids are thrilled to play with the Candlelighters' Ipad in the MDU when having clinic appointments. Support from our community allows Candlelighters to provide children with resources to help them get

through their days at the hospital.

running shoes

These are what my runners look like .... Unlike those of everyone participating in Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend!  Mine don't make their way off the hook too often, but a great big thank you to everyone on Team Candlelighters who are working hard and fundraising for Candlelighters.  Look for Candlelighters "Cheer Station" at Fairmount Park on Sunday May 27th!

A great big thank you to our friends from St. Martin de Porres Catholic School in Kanata for the over five hundred dollars that was raised by the staff and students during the Lenten season.

These funds will be used to help families experiencing a financial crisis and can help buy groceries, assist with paying utility bills - even rent/mortgage payments.

Thank you very much for helping our families!

FORE!  Ahem, that's right folks, I'll be hitting the links soon for the 2012 golf season.  Have your ears open and your head's up...ha ha ha.  All joking aside, the 9th Annual Chipping in for Charity golf tournament comes up on Tuesday June 5th.  We are fortunate to once again be sold out!  Looking forward to seeing our many returning sponsors and participants out at GreyHawk this year.  Thank you to presenting our sponsor TeraMach Technologies.  Please visit Chipping In For Charity to see all the participating sponsors and browse the pix from previous years.

Do you love to be outside in the summer?  Enjoy a day on the links?  Spending time with friends and/or family having fun?  Why not register to play in the Tori Carswell Memorial Golf Tournament?  It sure is fun ... and what could be better?  Golfing and supporting Candlelighters all in one.   Please visit Tori's Helping Hand to register, get details and learn about Tori's Helping Hand - an amazing initiative that allows for Candlelighters to provide support for palliative patients, and to those families travelling outside of Ottawa for their child's cancer treatment

Tamsin and I had a wonderful evening at the 2nd Annual Kaila the Kaila Beauty and Art Soiree, held on May 15th at the Michael Gennis Gallery here in Westboro.  Nice to see Jenny, Anne and Shelly that evening too.  Thank you so very much to Kaye and Billy, who have so graciously organized this beautiful evening in memory of Kaila, and also to Stephen Neale for all his organization!  It was a real treat to hear Joe Kennedy speak about organ donation also that evening.  Candlelighters is very fortunate and proud to be the recipient of the monies raised by The Paul Kennedy Team during the Race Weekend in memory of Joe and Lucille's son Paul Kennedy.  Check out Candlelighters to see everyone who is supporting Candlelighters at the Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race weekend.

Thank you to our member families who participated in the CN Cycle for CHEO.  Candlelighters is proud to be associated with this event and the $7500 that we receive helps Candlelighters provide our Parking Program.  This invaluable program covers the costs associated with our member families parking while their children are receiving treatment, going to clinic or other appoints.  It was a beautiful sunshiny day and it was nice to see so many of our Candlelighters members enjoying themselves!

Well folks..... as they say ...until next time.....

Volunteer of the Month!

We would like to introduce you to Manfred Wegner!
Manfred was born in Canada and is proud to be from a German descent. He has lived in Ottawa all his life, married in his early 20's and has two children~ Megan (21) and  Brandon (18).  Manfred was born a salesperson just like his mother and loves the interaction/exchange with all kinds of people.  He is very soft spoken and is a great listener. Manfred has a heart of gold. He is always there for his family, friends and co-workers.  Recently he has become involved in volunteering for Candlelighters and other cancer related organizations as this has become near and dear to him.  In late 2010, his son Brandon was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin's Disease). It was devastating but Manfred was there to help Brandon fight this disease. Brandon is now in remission and doing very well. Going through this kind of experience has opened Manfred's heart even bigger.  Manfred believes in Candlelighters, he loves to be with people and these two qualities help to make him the perfect volunteer.  Thank you Manfred!
