Spring is in the air .... Pretty soon we'll be back in our flip flops and shorts!  Not soon enough for some I am sure.  But the nice weather brings all kinds of outside activities like Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend, CN Cycle for CHEO and Chipping In For Charity - all great events that Candlelighters is involved in these coming months.  Check Candlelighters for all the info, and check back frequently as we are continually updating news and information.

A big THANK YOU goes out to Mr. Russell Grass and

Waterdon Construction Limited, Merlin Door System Ltd. and Alloy Fabrications who very generously donated 3 iPads for the CyberKids program.  Mr. Grass has been a long time supporter of Candlelighters and this extremely valuable program and we are always and greatly appreciative of his continued support.  Thank you Mr. Grass!  See Olivia (below) playing on one of the donated Ipads in the Medical Day Unit Clinic this past week!

CyberKids is a core Candlelighters program and addresses the challenges young cancer patients experience in keeping up with and connected to school while receiving cancer treatment.   Candlelighters loans devices ( laptops, IPads, netbooks) to students in grades 2 and higher, who cannot be in the classroom as a result of their treatment regimes.  This invaluable program gives them the tools they need to succeed and stay connected to teachers and classmates from their learning communities and friends and family as well.  Click here CyberKids to find out more!

And speaking of IPads .... Decisive Technologies donation of an IPad was top prize at the 4th Annual Chips for Charity Texas Hold'em event held February 24th.  Thanks go out to everyone who braved that snowy night and came out to Trattoria Caffé Italia for all the fun.  We're extremely grateful for prize donations from RONA, Keys Direct Marketing & Communications, Lalande Insurance, Manulife Financial, Preston Hardware, Creo Marketing, Contract Furniture Source, Rogers Publishing, Home Hardware in Stittsville, Car Star Collision, and another big THANK YOU to Gary Thomas and Rob Sametz who worked tirelessly to gather up all the above prizing and more!  Those two fellas did an amazing job - thanks guys!  Also thanks to Sam, Jason and Marc who volunteered their time that day to ensure things ran smoothly.

Ran smoothly ... boy, I am working the "segues" today .... Running smoothly  leads into this little diddy about  Team Candlelighters and the Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend.  "Team Candlelighters" continues to grow and I am thrilled with the enthusiasm and support we are receiving from individuals and teams participating in the race weekend activities.  Visit Candlelighters and see if someone you know is participating in support of Candlelighters - make a pledge, join a team... come out and have some fun.  Candlelighters will be in a very loud and enthusiastic "Cheering Station" along the route and we'd welcome any volunteers who'd like to join us in motivating and thanking all the participants.  Please email the Candlelighters' office if you would like to be one of our volunteers. Contact Email

A little update on the SensDen at CHEO .... We had over 50 respondents take the Sens Den Survey, which is greatly appreciated.  Candlelighters and CHEO are working together to find an appropriate solution to the removal of the fridge and microwave from the SensDen on 4North.  It is my sincerest hope to update you on the progress of those meetings in early April.  Candlelighters is dedicated to supporting families of children with cancer and will continue in our efforts to make a positive impact.

Help reduce the risk of infection! Just a reminder, when you come to clinic appts in MDU, please don't go up to 4North to visit!  If you'd like to chat with friends, let them know you're there and meet in the coffee shop or cafeteria.  This will help decrease the risk of infection for inpatients.  THANK YOU!

Celebrity Server night at Boston Pizza on Hunt Club was a great time.  Live music by "Go Long"~  Danielle Allard and Lucas Haneman (below) set the atmosphere for a great evening out.  In addition to their own music, they have performed amazing covers, including my favourite -"Sunglasses at Night".

Danielle and Lucas

Jeff, Morgan, Bill and Greg, Firefighters from Station 24, teamed up to join the servers at Boston Pizza.  Thanks to them, as well as Javed Somra and John Lalonde and all the BP staff!

Take good care, until next time.... Jocelyn
