| Greetings!
First off, I would like to say hello and introduce m yself to Junior Achievement supporters and volunteers. I am the new president of Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley & Monterey Bay. I have been with JA since June 16th and am enjoying it more and more each day. I will not bore you with all of the details of my background except to tell you that my years as the CEO of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Boys and Girls Clubs, along with 10 years serving as a member of the Campbell Union High School Board of Trustees have prepared me well for the challenge ahead. That challenge is very clear; "to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy." I was fortunate to be able to participate as a classroom volunteer in Mr. Barbara's 7th grade math class during the summer session. During my time in the classroom, it was very clear that each and every one of us can make a positive impact on the youth of today and our community's future citizens, employees and leaders. Our volunteers support what educators do every day. Junior Achievement's curriculum is matched to state academic standards with a very strong "stay in school" message woven into each lesson. My hope is that you will continue to support Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay and help to bring more volunteers to mold the youth of our community. Please contact me, Steve Tedesco at (408) 988-8915 ext. 210 or at stedesco@siliconvalley.ja.org with any questions or advice. | Ernst and Young Reaches Out
JA in a Day
"It really doesn't take much effort and time to contribute at school for a company like EY. As districts face cuts we should do our part," states Ernst and Young employee Steve Nguyen. There is no question that Ernst and Young did their part this summer.
On July 17, 2008, over 160 Ernst and Young volunteers from Seattle, Palo Alto and San Francisco reached out to 3 elementary schools, Christopher, Miner and Baldwin Elementary schools in the Oak Grove School District. They taught a total of 46 classes and touched the lives of nearly 880 students.
"They showed lots of enthusiasm for each activity and the kids were engaged the whole time. They were a pleasure to have!" expressed one teacher at Baldwin Elementary School.
During their JA in a Day event students learned the basic concepts of business and economics with Ernst and Young volunteers showing children how education is relevant to the workplace. Rachael Sanchez from Ernst and Young said she learned "even the smallest acts can make a large difference in a child's life!"

Bob Muzio, Distinguished Honoree Association for Fundraising Professionals Silicon Valley Philanthropy Day®
At JA, we joke that if we could clone Bob Muzio, JA's Board of Directors would be the best in the Valley! He is passionate about JA's mission, especially due to JA's focus on preparing the next-generation workforce. When asked about this passion, he refers to his strong conviction that JA is one of the best solutions to sustaining a thriving Silicon Valley. Bob's AFP nomination from JA came from his commitment to JA and because he has been instrumental in growing the success of JA's Getaway Golf Tournament. The event has grown in popularity and funds raised under his direction. Bob began chairing the event in its second year of existence within 2 years we have had a 94% increase in revenue. At last year's event, Bob saw that we had some leftover supplies from the day (Chianti and Salami). Instead of simply giving these items away, he spontaneously auctioned them off at the dinner - increasing the total funds raised for JA. The annual AFP SVC luncheon is November 17, 2008. Look for Bob's photo in the November issue of San Jose Magazine.

| What's happening in Hollister? Nikki says...
It's all happening because of Jeff Conway, Monterey Bay District Board Member, and his efforts to bring JA programs to the local schools.
Jeff has recruited 16 local community members to volunteer their time to teach JA's Economics for Success program to the students at Maze Middle School this summer on July 8, 2008. More than 350 students learned to make better choices in regards to their education and future career options. Volunteers came from San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, Dassel's Petroleum, YMCA, Hazel Hawkins, San Benito Bank, Jaime De La Cruz, County Supervisor for District 5 and many more.

New Faces at JA Butch Coyne and Nellie Tsai
New faces at Junior Achievement include a New Jersey native Nellie Tsai who has spent the last four years working at City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley as the Training and Program Manager. She feels fortunate to be able to continue to work in the non-profit sector, and is excited to be challenged by the work ahead of her in JA's Development Department. Nellie loves working with youth and volunteers, and looks forward to raising money and planning events for Junior Achievement, an organization whose mission and vision inspire her. She is a Rutgers University alumna, with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science. Interesting and important facts about Nellie are that she prefers Coke over Pepsi and is currently training to do her fourth half marathon.
Butch Coyne joined as the Vice President Education this August and comes to us with 25 years of experience in the non-profit sector. He has a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from the University of Dayton and a MA in Arts Administration from the University of Louisville. As Director of Marketing for San Jose Repertory Theatre, Butch oversaw the marketing of the Rep's new $27 million theatre center.
An active member of the community, Butch has chaired The San Jose Arts Round Table, San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau cultural tourism task force and has been a board member of the San Jose Downtown Association. Butch is a volunteer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society's Courageous Kids Day and for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk. In his spare time, Butch coaches softball for girls from 6 to 14 years of age.

The Initiative
A New JA Program
JA Worldwide® has entered into an exciting $5.5 million JA Jobshadow initiative (the "Initiative") with AT&T that will reach 100,000 high school students in the United States over the next five years. The purpose of the Initiative is to provide career exposure and insight into the education requirements for AT&T jobs to high school students in the United States with the goals of decreasing the high school drop out rates across the country and increasing the talent pipeline for corporate America.
Locally, the Initiative will begin in the Fall of 2008 with JA of Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay participating in 4 program events with a goal of reaching 108 high school students the first year. JA of Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay are excited to be a part of this amazing Initiative!
