Hello ZimmComm Fans:

The ZimmComm team wishes we could send some of the rain we've been receiving at our new world headquarters to the midwest.  Our prayers are with all the people suffering from the heat and dry weather.

Chuck will get to visit some of that heat this week when he travels to Illinois for the Conservation Technology Information Center Indian Creek Watershed Field Tour.  Then he moves to Iowa for a Wyffels Field Day and FMC Plot Tour.  Look for his coverage on AgWired during the week when internet access and time allows.

Have you marked your calendar for the NAMA Fall Conference?  It will be held September 25-26 in Minneapolis.  The theme is "Fertile Ground, Forward Thinking."  Listen to NAMA President Beth Burgy talk about what's different about the conference this year here.

Our latest ZimmPoll asked the question, " When do you think Congress will complete a Farm Bill?"

Our poll results: Twenty-two percent were optimistic and said before Sept. 30, 2012; twenty-eight percent were a bit more hesitant but said before the end of this calendar year; and twenty-five percent said both next year and maybe never.

Our new ZimmPoll is now live and asks the question, " How will Obamacare affect you and your business?" Some of the farm groups are split on the ruling, just as was the Supreme Court. But on a more personal/business level, how will this ruling affect you?

Here are some interviews you might have missed this week:
Now for some news from the ZimmComm News Network:

Insight into John Deere FarmSight

When it comes to FarmSight, Jerry Roell has the insight. He's John Deere's Director, FarmSight, Intelligent Solutions Group. Jerry says they began developing FarmSight about two years ago looking at three areas. The first of these is machine optimization and trying to figure out how to make machines more efficient, more productive and to monitor machine help. The second area of focus is logistics since farms are growing and their customers are having to manage a growing fleet of machines. The idea is to improve communications including how machines "talk to each other." The third of focus is decision support to help make it easier for customers to make decisions.   MORE

Private Companies Also Worried About USDA Cuts

Previously, we talked about how USDA officials are concerned about how possible budget cuts will affect their ability to keep providing the timely, accurate reports on which so many farmers depend. And they're not the only ones concerned. In our continuing series looking at the recent Farm Foundation webinar on data collection, we hear from Paul Hughes of Nestle Purina PetCare, who makes a baseball analogy about just how important USDA is.   MORE

Study: High Corn Lowers Indirect Land Use for Biofuels

A new study seems to add credibility to the arguments that high corn prices, often driven by demand for biofuels, are not increasing the actual indirect land use effects.    MORE

Farm Foundation Webinar: Data As Important As Ever

Think about for a moment just how important having good information on your GPS device is. You need to know exactly where you are in that field, how fast you're going, what the rate of distribution of your inputs are, right? Well, knowing exactly where you are obviously applies to the markets as well, and if you didn't receive good data to make your decisions, you could be as far off course in your operation as a tractor without those satellites above to guide it. But that stream of data people at the USDA have been able to provide could be in trouble with budgets cuts constantly looming overhead. Our friends at the Farm Foundation recently held a webinar organized by the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (C-FARE), in partnership with the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), and Montana State University to address those possible information issues.
