Howdy ZimmComm Fans:

It has been a hot one on the agriblogging highway as Chuck has traveled to Minneapolis for the NAMA Executive Committee Meeting and then on to Des Moines for the John Deere FarmSight Tech Summit.  Maybe things will cool down a little for the holiday week coming up.

Our latest ZimmPoll asked the question, "Will you buy E15 for your MY2001 or later car if it's offered?"

Our poll results: Nearly half, forty-nine percent, said Yes; twenty-nine percent said No; and twenty-two percent said it depends on price. Looks like consumers are in favor of having a choice at the pump, and are fans of ethanol!

Our new ZimmPoll is now live and asks the question, " When do you think Congress will complete a Farm Bill?" On June 20, the Senate voted 64 to 35 to pass the Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2012. When do you think - given that it's an election year and amidst all other "big" news items - we will have a new "Farm Bill?"

Here are some interviews from this week you might have missed:

During the 2012 American Seed Trade Association annual convention I met Chuck Larson, Executive Director, Americans for Choice and Competition in Agriculture. Although I had heard of this newly formed organization I didn't know much about it until we had a chance to sit down and chat. It appears that the main focus of the group is to influence an accord being developed by the American Seed Trade Association and the Biotechnology Industry Organization to address how competition will be handled when biotechnology traits go off patent. The big one coming up is the Monsanto Roundup Ready soybean patent which expires in 2014. You can see the organization's position on the accord here (pdf).   MORE

ASTA Represents Vegetable and Flower Seed

During the American Seed Trade Association convention the organization's divisions conduct business and report on activities. One of those is the Vegetable and Flower Seed Division, chaired by Kent Croon, Monsanto. I visited with Kent after his report was given. Kent works in technology development within Monsanto Vegetable Seeds. Kent says that many people think corn and soybeans when they think of ASTA but that there are a lot of companies in the vegetable and flower seed business represented by the organization. His division makes sure they don't get lost in the conversation. ASTA works on ways to promote their seed within the industry.   MORE

Nebraska Corn Board Funding More Blender Pumps

Retailers in Nebraska will get some help putting in pumps that give more choices when it comes to ethanol. The Nebraska Corn Board will give grants of $30,000 for acquisition and installation of the first blender pump at a location and $10,000 for a second pump to qualifying retailers.    MORE
It looks like there's more trouble for Valero's corn-based ethanol plants. In just more than a week, the company has shuttered a second ethanol plant. This Reuters article says this one is in Linden, Indiana, but the reasons are the same as last week's closing of Valero's Nebraska facility: high corn prices.  MORE

When it comes to today's agriculture, there are many examples of great farmers and ranchers all over the country doing wonderful things to bring food to the table for those around the world. But few of those farmers and ranchers are recognizable by consumers, mainstream media and influencers. In fact, the pictures and perceptions of farmers and ranchers often do not match reality. MORE

Milking Parlor: Farm Bill Has Much for Dairy to Like

The U.S. Senate has passed the The Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2012, better known as the Farm Bill, getting through that chamber by a bipartisan vote of 64 to 35. That bipartisan support pleased Senate Agriculture Chair Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and the ranking member of the committee, Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS). The vote also pleased the Dairy Farmers of America who said passage "sent an important message to the nation's agriculture industry" and the Farm Bill contains dairy provisions that will provide producers with tools to better manage volatility and their margins, while keeping them competitive in the global marketplace.
