Have you ever assessed your
own cultural competence?

DiversityNursing.com would like its audience of nurses, employers and schools of nursing to take a few minutes to visit our Blog and offer your input. These questions are meant to foster discussion. To some extent, we all have biases, so to the degree you are comfortable, please participate. Discussing questions like what we have listed below in a constructive manner will ultimately provide a learning forum for all.

1. Have you been exposed to classes or training in cultural competence?

2. Are you aware of your own biases?

3. How do you feel about working with people of other races, religions, age, sexual orientations?

4. How would you deal with a co-worker who has made a biased or prejudicial remark toward a co-worker or patient?

5. How would you prepare yourself to work with a co-worker or patient from a different culture than yours?

6. What types of questions would you ask another person who's culturally different than yourself to make it more comfortable for you and/or them?

Certificate in Diversity Management

The Certificate in Diversity Management program is a partnership between the AHA's Institute for Diversity in Health Management and Simmons College in Boston. The 12-month blended program seeks to lessen health disparities and improve health care workforce diversity by providing skill, leadership and career development opportunities for practitioners in diversity management.

Designed to meet the needs and schedules of working professionals, the curriculum was developed by the Institute's American Leadership Council for Diversity in Health Care. It includes three on-site residencies, online forums and opportunities to interact with experienced practitioners. By the conclusion of the program, each participant will have developed a Diversity/Disparity Action Plan: a road map for the substantial change needed to address disparity and diversity issues in each participant's institution and community. More information can be found at http://www.simmons.edu/shs/execed/diversity-management/index.shtml
