ASHHRA (American Society for Healthcare Human Resources) Conference a Great Success

ASHHRA's (American Association of Healthcare Human Resources Association) Annual Conference was held in Austin, TX October 11 - 14. DiversityNursing.com exhibited at the conference and over 650 HR professionals were in attendance. There were 3 Learning Sessions devoted to Diversity in Healthcare that are summarized below. On Saturday -- 10/11, Amy Wilson-Stronks, Principal Investigator with The Joint Commission presented "Developing a Workforce that Meets the Needs of Diverse Populations". On Sunday -- 10/ 12, Caroline Geiersbach, HR Program Coordinator at NMH presented "Advancing Northwestern Memorial's Diversity Plan: Focus on Management Diversity & Cultural Competence". On Monday --10/13, Fred Hobby, President & CEO, Institute For Diversity in Health Management of the American Hospital Association, Chicago, Il moderated a Special Interest Session titled "Diversity Panel: Developing an Inclusive Culture". The HR Leaders that discussed the latest issues and trends in diversity included Susan Gilbert, AVP of Diversity Programs, Office of Institutional Diversity, Univ. Of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; Molly Seals, SVP - HR & Learning at Humility of Mary Health Partners, Youngstown, OH; and Stacey Lawson, Director, Human Resources, Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.
Topics included: · How do you define and measure inclusion?
· The importance of reflecting your community at all levels within your organization.
· Diversity must be part of your institution's core values in all the organization does.
· Diversity needs to be a system driven initiative. It's too big a job for HR alone.
· Recruiting and Retaining a diverse staff as well as the overall satisfaction of your employees and patients.
· Ensuring that your staff feels valued, respected and appreciated.
· CLAS standards -- There are 14 standards. Four are now mandatory by law; the remaining 10 are guidelines/standards. It is important for all healthcare institutions to become familiar with the 14 standards. Click on this link for more details.
