August 27, 2010
We hope you enjoyed our Greening of Detroit outing at Romanowski Park on June 16.  The weather cooperated, everyone had fun and it was good exercise.  Our continuing goal is to contribute to our community in ways such as this each year.  If you have any suggestions for an event of this type for 2011 please see one of the members of the Sustainability Committee.

Over the past 20 months it has been our mission to promote the concept of sustainability throughout Avanti and to make it real in as many ways as possible.  Our efforts have included the publishing of this, our Bright Ideas Newsletter, creation of our Live Green webpage, installation of our drinking water purification system at Murphy/Telegraph, the use of compact florescent lightbulbs, office recycling of plastic, paper, cardboard and soon glass, and our Earth Week celebration to name some of the initiatives we have started since the beginning of 2009.
We believe we have accomplished many things, but there will always be more to do.  Also, we must continually balance the business goals of Avanti with our sustainability efforts.

One thing is certain.  If all of us do everything we can as individuals to incorporate sustainability into our daily activities both at work and at home, the better off you will be, Avanti will be and our world will be.
There is something positive you can do starting today!
If there is one specific personal initiative we would like to see everyone undertake, it would be the recycling of your personal electronics.  This includes not only your old computers, but radios, stereo equipment, cell phones, printers, speakers, tuners, amplifiers, etc. as well.  Our landfills continue to be dumping grounds for toxic elements such as lead, mercury, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium and chromium as well as others.  When it comes time to trade up to new technology, please find a way to recycle your used items.
To locate your nearest recycling center for these items, we recommend visiting (they also have an iphone app). Or you can check with your local city or county for locations where you can drop things off.  See if your local government sponsors a 'Haz-Mat' (hazardous materials) day where things can be taken.  If you are unable to find an appropriate place to recycle an electronic item please ask a member of the Sustainability Committee and we will get the answer for you.
Of course the best use of unwanted electronics is to donate the items to charity so they can be reused.

more updates
Our 'Copy Paper Usage Challenge' for 2010 continues to track well and we again want to remind you to think before you print.  The more information we can store electronically instead of on a hard copy piece of paper the better off everyone will be.  Check out the progress we are making toward this challenge as well as other important sustainability statistics on our Live Green webpage on the Avanti website.

Lastly, I encourage you to become involved on a personal level with our Sustainability Team.  Our meetings for the remainder of this year will be September 23, October 28 and December 9.  We meet for one hour in the afternoon.  Please contact me if you are interested in attending.
As the current ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrates, our earth is fragile and it is everyone's duty to help care for it.  Please do your part in our small corner.
Thanks, and live green!
