 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #179
5 Tips to Becoming a Great Supervisor

  1. office partyCelebrate the small things. It's pretty easy to recognize the big moments in life, but leaders need to discover, and even create, reasons to 'make merry' with their staff. Celebrate that it's Friday, or that your team finished a project, or reached a milestone toward a goal.
  2. Create a positive work environment. Industry studies show that employees rank working conditions as the second highest motivating factor for their work. Positive communication, physical facility, decision-making - make all of it a place your workers want to be.
  3. Provide training. Staff development is never done. When content training isn't needed, schedule 'tune-up' training. Use your own staff who are skilled in a particular area, or lead the training yourself, but keep them growing.
  4. Give leadership roles. Consider having many leaders in your department or team; create a leader of a particular task, or assign a meeting leader that rotates. When someone attends training away from the office, let them be a presenter to the rest of the team.
  5. Offer one-on-one coaching. Studies show that retention and application rise approximately 80% when training is coupled with follow-up coaching. And it sends a message that you care about that particular staff person. And people perform at their best for someone they know cares about them.
