Very soon, the newsletter will have a different look -- and the websites are undergoing a major overhaul! Changes in all walks of life are inevitable, and they can be a good thing -- but can certainly be stressful! MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #176 Surviving & Thriving During Change |
The biggest mistake most leaders make when implementing change is trying to transition too much at once. It is said that most people resist change. A more accurate statement is most people resist being changed. There's a difference. People, as well as systems, can only handle change effectively when it's introduced and implemented incrementally. As you approach that task of leading through a change, consider these steps:
- Prioritize what's most important. Don't 'throw out the baby with the bath water' so to speak. Start with the things that are truly necessary, and leave other things intact that don't have to be changed, so your staff is not overwhelmed.
- Communicate the core values. This is one of the most neglected components. Stay focused on the overall mission, and state clearly and often why this change is necessary, so staff have clear understanding of where they are going.
- Model the behavior you want. Your staff will never rise higher than your own conduct and commitment; give them an example to follow so they see first-hand what's expected.
I certainly can't fit all the steps of effective change in one little newsletter tip, but this should get you started. Leading through change is a core competency for leaders.
