Greetings!
Are you experiencing conflict in your workplace between the younger workers and the older workers? Well, you are not alone. Evidently, this has become a world-wide problem. A few months ago, I was invited to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to conduct a leadership institute on the topic of multiple generations in the workplace! So you are definitely not alone in your challenge. I've written on this topic before, but many of you write in and ask me to address this issue again, so let's take a look! And as promised, we now have available a self-paced, on-demand course dedicated to this topic - it's called Managing Staff in Stressful Times: Celebrations and Challenges of Leading Multiple Generations. Take a quick look HERE and see how this information can transform relationships between your younger and older workers.
Unleash the leader within!

MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #171 Younger Worker Vs. Older Worker |
For the first time in history, we have four different generations represented in the workplace. All four bring their strengths, their biases, their resistance and their challenges. But as a whole, when those in leadership maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses, this can be a strength that none can match. The names of each generation are different, depending on those doing the research. The oldest generation is called the Veterans or Radio Babies; then the Baby Boomers; the Busters or Generation X; and the Bridgers or Generation Y, also sometimes called the Millenials. Researchers do not agree on the exact years of each generation, but approximates are the same, and distinct characteristics are the same. Do statements such as 'the younger generation has no work ethic,' and 'senior management needs to come out of the dark ages' sound familiar? Probably. The younger generation does have a work ethic; it just looks much different from the work ethic of the Baby Boomers, which is the generation that is primarily in leadership right now. The Boomers want the Busters and Bridgers to lead the way they have led, and that's not going to happen. The two younger generations have watched the Baby Boomers commitment to work; they grew up as children of the Boomers. They resent the long hours Boomers work, and they want a different lifestyle. A bridge can be built between these generations, but it has to be intentional, sincere, and it will take time and an ongoing commitment. It will also take an open mind. Where to start? Educate yourself on the dynamics of each generation. Learn what the issues are, and what causes the conflict. Managing Staff in Stressful Times: Celebrations and Challenges of Leading Multiple Generations can cease the conflict and create harmony between your older and younger workers. In the course you will:
- Identify the 4 generations in your workplace
- Understand each generation's needs & expectations
- Learn strategies to apply so younger/older workers work in harmony

Leading multiple generations is now considered a core competency; meet the challenge and rise to your greatest potential as a leader. |
