Capture the HistoryJune 28, 2010
Greetings!

When was the last time you created something that would have long-lasting effects?

scrapbooksMy daughter Angie is planning the neatest project for their oldest son, Alex, this summer. Angie is a very talented scrapbooker, and she and Alex are going to take several mini-trips this summer, visiting places that have lots of history and information about his great grandparents and great-great-grandparents who are no longer living. Some are trips to cemeteries, some will be interviewing people and hearing stories. Then they will create a scrapbook together of all the things they have learned.

What a wonderful way to capture some history for little Alex, who is six years old. It will make it 'come alive,' and not just be facts and information that doesn't mean anything to him.

I'm excited to be a part of the summer project (since I'm the Grammy, I get to tell stories, too!) and see the finished product. Take a look at today's Leadership Tip, and think about ways you can capture your own history!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #168
Capture the History

Regardless of the type of organization or business you are a part of, it has a rich history. As leaders, it's important for us to capture some of the history - it helps our staff have the big picture, feel a greater sense of ownership, understand from where we've come, which gives a better direction of where we're going.

To go forward, it is very important to capture the history of our past, which will serve as the foundation for the future.

So you may be asking, 'who in the world has time to do this?' It doesn't have to be time consuming, if we are intentional about capturing history as we go along. Consider some possibilities:

know your historyTake pictures:
  • of facilities, especially when they are about to change
  • of events, capturing banners with messages
  • of people, especially at specific milestones

Record videos:
  • ask people to tell quick stories
  • make videos when significant changes happening
Add it to the agenda
  • include a 5 minute agenda item at staff meetings to let someone "tell about when"
Keep it alive
  • include milestones in newsletter articles, state-of-the-organization updates
  • create a 'moment in history' bulletin board, or 'history corner' in company communications
Tap into the interest
  • most organizations have at least one person who is a 'history buff' - tap into the skills and interest of that person and encourage them to create an ongoing communication channel of the organization's history
This doesn't need to be an overwhelming task, or even something that much time is even spent talking about. It just needs to have a 'presence' to help create a culture within the organization that honors the past, embraces the present, and plans for and looks forward to the future.
