Pathways to Excellence
Embrace the PresentJune 14, 2010
Greetings!

St. LouisRecently I spent two days in St. Louis, Missouri - the Gateway to the West - working with a superb management team! (I know some of you from that team are reading this!!)

One of the things we talked about was setting personal and professional goals...

....why it's important to set them.....
.....how to stay focused and experience progress in reaching the goals...
....and how to maintain a balance in the midst of it.

Today's leadership tip is about setting goals, but also about the importance of embracing the present, and not losing yourself in the quest toward the future. Enjoy!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #166
Embrace the Present

About three weeks ago, our oldest grandson turned six years old. It seems like only last year that he was born. How on earth has six years passed?

It is so true that our children grow up very fast, and I am learning that grandchildren grow up even faster. Children do not wait for our lives to slow down before they grow up.

Teresa presenting in St. LouisNeither does anything else. Goal-setting is important; it keeps us focused and keeps the next step in front of us. It keeps us from getting stale and from becoming out of touch. It builds excitement and confidence.

The other side of that coin is we cannot become controlled by goals not yet reached, to the point we are always saying, "when this happens, I will be satisfied;" or "when I accomplish this next step, I will slow down."

At the risk of sounding like a cliché, it's the small moments we must embrace. The big moments are made up of small moments. As a leader, if we are always racing toward the next goal, and missing what's going on around us, we will be out of touch with the needs and potential of our staff, the opportunities for strengthening teamwork and relationships, and the overall effectiveness of our program or organization.

The best time to embrace the present is today, right now. What's going on in your day that, if you don't pay attention, you will miss? Take five minutes and assess your day. Live it to its fullest. Make one of your goals to find specific ways to 'embrace the present.'
