Pathways to Excellence
Celebrate the MilestonesJune 7, 2010
Greetings!

graduationGraduations are all around us - it's that time of year! Last week we attended the high school graduation in our community, held outside on the football field - hundreds of young adults celebrating one of the biggest milestones of their lives!

The week before that, our local university held many graduation ceremonies, and we helped a few celebrate that were marking that achievement in their lives. Eighth grade graduations scattered in-between, and one very poignant in our family, our oldest grandson is "graduating" from kindergarten and next year will be a big first grader!!

Graduations are important - they are milestones, and it's good that we celebrate. This week's leadership tip is about milestones, and why they're important. Check it out - and if you're a new grad, or have a new graduate in your life, celebrate!!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #165
Celebrate the Milestones

Congratulations!Graduation is just one example of milestones in our lives --- getting a driver's license, getting married, having a child - those are other milestones. But so is getting our first tooth, taking our first step, learning to ride a bike.

In the work world, we experience milestones all the time, but many are overlooked and not celebrated nor recognized. When we neglect to acknowledge the milestones and achievements of our staff, however small they may seem, we miss a great opportunity to provide encouragement that is often the catalyst to help them take another step toward a new milestone.

Milestones in the work place come in many shapes and sizes....
  • Completing a college course
  • Learning a new software program
  • Finishing a certification
  • Receiving a promotion
  • Having perfect work attendance
  • Implementing a new program
  • Reaching a desired weight
  • Accomplishing a goal
101 WaysThe list is endless, and there are many ways to recognize and celebrate milestones; easy, no-cost/low-cost methods that are not expensive nor time consuming. There are resources to help you, such as the "101 Ways to Reward Employees," book series; there are several books that are "101 Ways to......" and the topics are different, but they are all geared toward recognizing and celebrating in small ways.

Think about your own workplace - how do you recognize and celebrate milestones? How could you improve your process? It's one of the best gifts you can give to boot staff morale. This is on that it's really hard to overdo!!
