Pathways to Excellence
Stick to Your ValuesMay 24, 2010
Greetings!

ChoicesRecently I received an email from a reader of the weekly enewsletter, which turned out to be someone that had been a colleague several years ago. She shared an incredibly heartwarming story about her own professional journey during the past several years, and how her decisions had been based on connections she had been given through professional development opportunities that I had been a part of.

I was extremely touched by her story and so thankful that she would share it with me. Mostly, I was reminded of how vital it is to stick to your values, and be about the things you see as most important; even when it may feel like you're "swimming upstream" and feel like your efforts are not making a difference for anyone.

For this story, and for all of you who give me feedback and responses to the weekly enewsletter, I say a huge thank you! It brings me tremendous joy. Take a look at this week's tip, and "stick to your values' this week - it will pay off!!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #164
Stick to Your Values

How do you define success? Making a lot of money, becoming well-known, achieving the goals you set? Webster's first definition is "a favorable outcome." That could mean a lot of different things to different people, you think?

Bon AppetitI recently read an article about the Bauccio Lectures in Entrepreneurship; Fedele Bauccio is the founder of Bon Appétit Management Company, which is an onsite restaurant company that provides café and catering services to corporations, colleges and universities, and specialty venues. They have over 400 locations in 28 states.

As part of the lecture, Dr. Bauccio talked about the keys to his company's success. He stated that he has grown his business by finding customers who share his values and believe in his mission.

Sometimes, as a leader, you will be influenced to compromise your values. There will be times when it feels like you stand alone, trying to put or keep in place a program, an activity, a service, a product - whatever it might be in your arena - that colleagues or supervisors do not support or endorse. At times like these, you have to ask yourself hard questions, and sometimes there are hard answers.

But you will know when you are compromising your deeply-rooted values, and each time you do, it will diminish you a little bit as a leader, and as a person. Something inside you will die.

As a leader, stand for what you believe in, and speak up for those who have less voice and influence than you do. Strive to make a difference in their life. Use your influence wisely, with integrity, always staying connected to your values, and always treating staff and colleagues as you would want to be treated.

And that, my friend, is the real key to success.
