Greetings!
Last week I had a wonderful time facilitating a one-day Leadership Institute for several of the leaders in our local area. It is no longer a surprise to me that one of the most requested training topics, and one that was included in the Institute, is multiple generations in the workplace.
I've written on this topic before, and questions and comments keep coming in. It's a common challenge that, with a healthy approach and strategy, can be a tremendous asset!
Celebrations and Challenges of Multiple Generations is one of the topics you'll be seeing soon as part of the new Leadership Series which I introduced last week.
Check out today's leadership tip on multiple generations, and watch your email for more details on the new Leadership Series!
Unleash the leader within!

MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #163 Crossing the Generations | |
For the first time in history, we have four different generations represented in the workplace. All four bring their strengths, their biases, their resistance, their challenges. But as a whole, when those in leadership maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses, this can be a strength that none can match.
The names of each generation are different, depending on those doing the research. The oldest generation is called the Veterans or Radio Babies; then the Baby Boomers; the Busters or Generation X; and the Bridgers or Generation Y, also sometimes called the Millenials.
Researchers do not agree on the exact years of each generation, but approximates are the same, and distinct characteristics are the same.
I conduct one and two day workshops on this topic, so it's challenging to pick one short tip for today's article. But the most important, I think, as a starting point is to educate yourself and your staff on the presence and implications of having these four generations in your workplace. Raising the awareness helps you formulate conversation and teaching around it, which allows you to begin the process of focusing on the strengths.
Creating a cultural awareness will help you redirect unhealthy statements such as 'the younger generation has no work ethic,' and 'senior management needs to come out of the dark ages.' Do these sound familiar? Probably. Every organization I've worked with in the past several years are faced with the blessing and the curse of having these multiple generations, and thus, these tensions in their workplace.
Much information is available for you - take the time to learn. Search the internet, attend a workshop, talk to leaders who are successful in leading multiple generations. Consider the upcoming mini-course in the Leadership Series - watch for more information coming soon, or feel free to email me at Teresa@teresagilbert.com if you have questions or training requests.
Leading multiple generations is now considered a core competency; meet the challenge and rise to your greatest potential as a leader! |
