Most Powerful Six: Encourage Their DevelopmentMay 3, 2010
Greetings!

encouragementDo you agree with the statement that "people give their best to those who help them rise to their potential"? Studies show overwhelmingly that this is true.

Think about your own personal and professional growth -- who has encouraged you along the way? Who has provided resources and knowledge that helped you develop?

Today we look at Tip #6 in the series of the Most Powerful Six -- the six most important questions you can ask your staff to rate on a scale of 1-5, according to Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. When these 6 questions are answered with a "5" rating, you have an incredibly effective staff person, team, department, and ultimately, entire organization.

Let's take a look!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #161
Most Powerful Six: Encourage Their Development

The sixth question in the Most Powerful Six questions is:
  • Is there someone at work who encourages my development?
Last week's tip in this series was simply to "care about them." Encouraging an individual to rise to his/her potential, and providing support and/or resources to make that possible, certainly strengthens the realization of being cared for.

How can we encourage the development of others? Certainly in both tangible and non-tangible ways.

When exploring ways to provide such encouragement, consider the following:

continuing educationHow can you invest in their ongoing formal development, in terms of education and training?
  • Providing financial resources
  • Providing them time to accomplish these goals
  • Encouraging them to reach their goals, as opposed to imposed ones
  • Creating support teams of individuals all working on similar goals
  • Developing systems to recognize milestones of professional growth
  • Implementing career ladder with financial or non-financial incentives for professional growth
There are many other ways to encourage the personal and professional development of staff, but this is a start. What can you implement in your work environment?

For more specific information on leadership training in any of these areas, feel free to contact me at Teresa@teresagilbert.com or visit the website at www.teresagilbert.com, and I would be glad to work with you individually.

As with the other questions in this series, ask your staff to rate, on a scale of 1-5, the answer to today's question. If the answer is less than 5, ask the person, 'what is one thing we could do to raise that score one number higher?' What things could we do to improve the amount of recognition and praise that staff receive in our workplace? And then see what you could begin to implement. You might be amazed at the results!
